Ankle knock may for Duffy to wait on cap

Everton defender Shane Duffy is keeping his fingers crossed an ankle knock won’t keep him out of the Republic of Ireland squad for the upcoming international friendly against Czech Republic.
Uncapped Duffy was delighted to learn of his call-up on Monday, coming into Giovanni Trapattoni’s 24-man squad for Aston Villa defender Richard Dunne, who will be out for two months with a fractured collarbone and will now undergo an operation on his right clavicle.
Twenty-year-old Duffy, however, will not part of the Everton squad today for the FA Cup fifth round tie against Blackpool at Goodison Park after having an ankle scan yesterday afternoon.
Therefore, the Derry native, whose father Brian is from Letterkenny, will have to see how the scan results are but will in all likelihood have to wait to make his international debut as Everton’s next fixture after today is on Saturday, March 3, against QPR - four days after the international at the Aviva Stadium. Everton manager David Moyes yesterday stated his delight with the way Duffy has progressed since returning from a loan deal at Scunthorpe last month.
“I’m delighted (to hear of the call-up) but he’s got an ankle injury so we’ll need to see how he is,” Moyes said. “He deserves it because since he came back from Scunthorpe he’s played really well in the first team, when he’s got in the side. We’ve been really impressed with him and the maturity of him in training. He’s not looked out of place when he’s trained and been in the first team. That’s good news for him and good news for us.”
