About us

The Donegal Democrat was first published on June 16, 1919, founded by John Downey. Based in Ballyshannon, the paper has served the people of Donegal for almost 100 years, offering a broad range of news, sports and photographic coverage.

Our ethos is to be community based and we believe firmly in offering encouragement, support and comment on the achievements and ambitions of the people of our county.

We are at the pulse of community life, the paper of record since 1919 and we offer a wide range of exclusive news stories, features, local community news, sports stories and opinion on all aspects of life here in Donegal.

Based in offices at Pier 1, Donegal Town and Larkin House, Letterkenny, we produce two compact newspapers every Monday morning, the Donegal Democrat and the Donegal People’s Press and on Thursday the Donegal Democrat, also in compact format.

‘The People’s Press’ was first published in April, 1931, based in Lifford. A year later it became known as The Donegal People’s Press. Since 1995 it has been a sister paper of the Donegal Democrat.
