One of the Letterkenny areas most distinctive personalities, Alphonsus Surpless, known to most as ‘Phonsie’, was laid to rest on Sunday.
The 82-year-old was a well regarded member of the local community and cut a distinctive figure with his long white beard, sandals and bicycle, which he used to travel around the area on.
He passed away in his sleep last Thursday night.
He was laid to rest after funeral mass in the Church of the Irish Martyrs with burial afterwards in Newtoncunningham All Saints cemetery. Mass was celebrated by his nephew Fr Joseph Quinn from Manchester.
Well noted for his kind demeanour, Phonsie was deeply religious and was often at the service of the church and was a keen fund-raiser for a number of charities and did great work in supporting the efforts of Sr. Josephine Walsh and her work with Housing Aid Bosnia.
