Great sadness as Pádraig Ó Ceallaigh is laid to rest

Pádraig Ó Ceallaigh was a man that was exceptionally well known and respected throughout the county and it was with sadness that people learnt of his death this week.

Pádraig Ó Ceallaigh was a man that was exceptionally well known and respected throughout the county and it was with sadness that people learnt of his death this week.

The former chairman of Donegal County Council passed away in the Donegal Hospice.

A retired teacher he taught at Owey Island from 1955 to 1957. The Falcarragh native also spent twenty years teaching in Carrigart. A former County Councillor he spent twenty years on the board of Údarás na Gaeltachta.

The County Mayor, Ian McGarvey was among those who attended the large funeral.

County Councillors and former public representatives stood as guard of honour outside St Finian’s Church in Falcarragh yesterday.

Father Seán Ó Gallchóir told those gathered that Pádraig Ó Ceallaigh was a man of the people who had a great interest in his local parish of Cloich Cheann Fhaola and the history pertaining to the area.

Pádraig Ó Ceallaigh is survived by his wife Mary, sons Joe, Pádraig, Breandan and daughter Sineád.
