It’s all systems go in Glencolmcille this weekend, as the annual Glencolmcille Agricultural Show kicks off a great week of Feile Ghleanncholmcille. Final preparations are under way as the Show committee host the 3rd Glencolmcille Agricultural Show since its revival three years ago.

The Summer of 2010 saw the revival of one of the most successful agricultural shows ever held in Donegal and one that has continually attracted exceptionally large crowds

The Glencolmcille Agricultural Show or Taispeántais Ghleann Cholm Cille was first set in 1954 by Fr. James McDyer and in its heyday, the exhibition featured over 1,600 entries in various categories, second only to the Balmoral Show in Belfast.

For lovers of the land and the traditional rural life, the Glen Agricultural Show is a must and hopefully a start to what hopefully may turn out a great weekend for all things Donegal.

“We are overwhelmed by the response we have got,” said Micheal O’Gara, chairman of the show committee. “I would like, on behalf of the committee, to thank all the people who have put in entries, it just keeps getting bigger and bigger.”

The show committee would also like to thank CLG Naomh Columba, all the sponsors, and all the stewards and volunteers who help out.

Entries for non-perishable items will be accepted on Friday evening, 6-9pm. All other entries, including livestock, can be entered on the morning of the show from 8am to 10pm, The show starts at 9am, with the official opening around midday, fingers crossed for sunshine! The organisers look forward to seeing you there on the day.

Of course, the fun continues on with the Feile Ghleanncholmcille, which starts on Saturday and runs through all of next week.

Ellen McGinley of the Festival Committee said, “We would like to extend a great Failte to everybody to Féile Ghleanncholmcille which runs all next week and hope that everybody will enjoy the wide variety of events in our programme.

“We would like to thank all our generous sponsors for their loyal support - without their help we just could not have this festival year after year.

“Féile Ghleanncholmcille has something for all the family and for every age group so we extend a warm invitation to everyone to come along and enjoy the various attractions at the festival.

“We have a wealth of children’s events including a puppet show, Fancy Dress, Art Workshops, as well as fun for all ages with Lá Gaelach, Street Events, Music, Talent Show, Drama, Toss the Sheaf, Pet Show and Car Treasure Hunt as well as sporting events including Clay Pigeon Shooting, Wrestling, Road Race and Sea Angling Competition. Don’t forget - entertainment nightly in local pubs as well.”
