Avril Sweeney, Donegal County Childcare Manager has recently been appointed to the Board of Directors of a leading advocacy organisation that works for the advancement of high quality care and education as a right for all young children in Ireland.

Start Strong, based in Merrion Street, Dublin, works to promote informed policy development and increased investment in young children and advocates strongly to bring early care and education in Ireland up to the highest international standards by 2020.

Ms Sweeney commented, “I feel honoured to be put forward for a Directorship of an organisation of this calibre. It presents a great opportunity to ensure that the voice of the Donegal childcare sector is represented in national organisations such as Start Strong. All too often, childcare policies enacted in Dublin are not transferrable to rural parts of the county where the cultural context and hence the needs of parents and children are inherently different.”

Avril who lives in Inis Eoghain, holds an Honours Degree in Early Childhood and a Masters Degree in Education from Queens University Belfast and has worked as Manager of Donegal County Childcare since 2008.
