A stalwart from the business and entertainment community of old, Conal Hugh Keeney, has passed away in Letterkenny.
The late Mr. Keeney, who died peacefully at the age of 94 in Letterkenny General Hospital on Tuesday, was involved for many years along with his brothers in the running of the popular Fiesta Ballroom, a weekly haunt for hundreds of dance and music hungry patrons. In addition he helped run the Denver Ballroom in Rathmullan.
He also worked for H.B., selling ice cream, and in his day showed films the length and breadth of the county, images on screens that enthralled the local communities and provided hours of entertainment for those who might not otherwise have had an opportunity to see the stars of the era on celluloid.
A native of Ardara, the late Mr. Keeney was predeceased by his brothers, Charlie Joe, Leo and Phonsie, and sisters, Annie Kathleen and Suzanna.
The last of his generation, he is survived by his wife, Margaret (nee McAteer), sons Gerard (Gus), Castlereagh; Kieran, Sligo; Malachy and Leo, both Port Road; Christopher, Doon Glebe, New Mills; daughters, Pasqueline Blake, Stoney Arch, New Line Road; Pauline Doherty, Listillion; Siobhan Melvin, Meedarragh Park; daughters-in-law, Maria, Catriona, Sarah and Ann; sons-in-law, Pascal, Felix and Gearoid; grandchildren, great-grand children, other relatives, neighbours and friends to whom sincerest sympathy is extended.
His remains were being waked at his home at Port Road. Removal from there took place yesterday evening.
