Surfers, Anglers, Boxers, Football teams, glamourous “Belles” Community groups and simply people who are just concerned about their environment and its appearance all joined together last weekend to transform their town into a sparkling example of how a community can work together for the overall good.
The popular RTE series “Dirty Old Town” led by Colm Hayes has succeeded in transforming towns throughout the country and with some gentle encouragement from Tracy Ferguson, Colin Drummond and Gina Geeghan, RTE arrived in town to record the transformation.
Throughout the weekend up on 200 volunteers worked around the clock in splendid sunshine to ensure that the resort town would emerge as one of the cleanest and attractive resorts in the country.
Tracy Ferguson told the Donegal Democrat, “ We have used over 200 litres of paint, 40 rollers, 30 brushes, 25 buckets and 25 trays.
“Of course all the volunteers had to be fed and this involved over 20 large trays of sandwiches, litres and litres of tea, coffee, water, juice and minerals.”
“ Bundoran just came out and said we are one of the best - if not the best!
“We had support from visitors, both moral and actual with holiday makers turning up to help with the work saying Bundoran was their home from home.
“Businesses and individuals in Bundoran and beyond contributed to the success of the event by lending their time, staff and services as well as donating funds to the projects.
RTE’s Colm Hayes covered practically every corner of the town and took up the paint brush himself on a few occasions.
Speaking to the Donegal Democrat on the very edge of the Atlantic on the Boat Quay Colm said, “ Just look out there - Donegal Bay, Slieve League and the Bluestack Mountains - throw in the golden beaches, a few dolphins and numerous surfers - this has to be one of the best views in the country.
“The effort here has been amazing - all strands of the community have joined together and the trick now is to keep the momentum going.”
The programme will be shown on Wednesday week, April 25th on RTE 1 TV at 8:00 pm.
