In recent times in many different areas of work and public service we have seen the retirement of many fine servants stepping down - the most recent being the retirement of Martin O’Malley who is now known nation wide as the “Community Policeman”.
Yet another Donegal Garda and one also known far and wide for his community work has decided to call it a day - the gentle giant from Donegal Gda. Connie Mc Gettigan who served in Sligo.
Connie who hails from a family of eight from Doochary entered Templemore on the 7th. July in 1977 nearly 35 years ago and served in Dublin for a number of years before making his way back to his adopted home of Sligo via stalwart terms of duty in Blacklion and Manorhamilton.
Connie started his final tour of duty on the 8th February in 1984 in Sligo and one of his most enjoyable and fulfilling times was when he worked as the Community Garda in the North Ward for over nine years.
He was always available to everyone in all sports and was of course the man for all the quiz’s both as a participant and indeed quizmaster. As a result many charities and organisations benefited from his hard work and commitment. The popular Garda was also President of Strandhill Golf Club and chairman of the local Branch of his beloved Arsenal - a team that he still follows with a passion.
On Thursday last an impromptu get together in Connolly’s Bar in Sligo experienced the massive esteem that Connie is held in when over a hundred colleagues and friends turned up to help him celebrate his last day on duty.
His brothers Des and John Joe along with many family and friends were all present in a truly great night.
Connie is married to Una a native of Ballina and they have two beautiful daughters Aisling and Sinead.
We wish them health, happiness and long life together.
