Dog owners who allow their animals to foul in public places and don’t clean it up afterwards could be subject to a “substantial fine”, Letterkenny Town Clerk Paddy Doherty told last week’s meeting of the local Town Council.

Members heard that over 2,000 free ‘poop and scoop’ packages had been handed out from the Public Services Centre in the town since last Autumn.

Dog lovers appear to be paying heed to the calls to clean up after their pets foul in public places, councillor Victor Fisher was informed after asking what action was being taken against owners of dogs that foul in the local parks and on pavements around the town.

Commented the Town Clerk: “Dog owners who allow their dogs to foul in public places and not clean it up are guilty of an offence under the Litter Pollution Act which is subject to a substantial fine.”
