Donegal Local Development Company (DLDC) managed distribute nearly one and a half times its initial budget for funding this year, from €1m to €1.45M.
In his End of Year Report, Dr. Caoimhin Mac Aoidh, CEO, stated that “despite 2011 being one of the most problematic and difficult years for local development purposes”, DLDC not only achieve all its targets but had actually exceeded grant spending goals. As a result, approximately 40 community and privately promoted development projects were supported this year.
Dr Mac Aoidh noted that this year saw the first full year roll out of the Local and Community Development Programme, which was a challenge “given the change in objectives from its predecessor”. However, he was delighted that DLDC exceeded all its targets for the programme with the funder, Pobal, and that DLDC’s multi-annual Strategic Plan had been well received by POBAL.
Good progress had been made on a number of social inclusion progress and the company had taken on a new ‘Volunteering in the Community Programme’.
Chairman Jim Slevin said significant growth had been achieved this year, with core staff numbers increasing from 23 to nearly 40.
Mr. Slevin added: “It is hard to find a community which has not felt positive developments” through the supports of the Rural Social Scheme. He noted that the new TÚS scheme had created up to 120 community placements of DLDC employees” and said the scheme “will have a transforming impact on our rural areas, villages and towns”.
The achievements of the comapny’s Rural Recreation Officer were also recognised as was DLDC’s good performance in terms of corporate governance.
Looking forward, the Chairman noted that 2012 would open with in excess of almost one half million euros worth of LEADER contracts agreed and noted that the company would be vigourously promoting further opportunities under the programme throughout the new year.
