There was tremendous sadness in Glencolumbkille and environs this week with the passing of local businessman Leonard Byrne on Sunday, followed by the sudden passing of his wife Mary in Dublin on Tuesday.

Former County Mayor, Cllr Brendan Byrne, paid tribute yesterday to the very popular shopkeepers and undertaker from Cashel.

“My brother is married to their niece, so I know the family very well. This has been a terrible shock to everyone in the community, one that people are finding very hard to take in.

“Leonard and Mary were both very hard-working, kind and honest people. They were good people in every sense of the word - good-living, devoted to their family and good community people.

“Leonard had been unwell in recent times and Mary cared for him at home. They were lovely, lovely people who will be very sadly missed.”

Remains reposing at the family home. Removal from there tomorrow (Friday) to St Columba’s Church, Cashel, Glencolumbkille for 11am Requiem Mass. Burial immediately afterwards in the adjoining cemetery. Family flowers only, please. Donations, if desired, to Killybegs Community Hospital, Oncology Unit, Sligo, or Coronary Care, Letterkenny.
