Grease is the word this week in Ballybofey

A local musical selling out its four-night run before it even opens - what a rare thing that is.

That's the happy reality though, with the Butt Drama Circle's production of that all-time favourite, Grease, which opens on Tuesday night at the Balor, Ballybofey.

All four of the originally scheduled performances, from August 9th to 12th, have already sold out and two more nights, August 15th and 16th, have been added.

The success is hardly a surprise, given the calibre of the group's offerings to date, from top-quality, serious dramas like The Glass Menagerie and Brian Friel's Translations, to fantastically funny pantos and comedies like Mother Knows Best and, of course, wonderful musicals, The Butt Drama Circle has a long history of providing great entertainment.

Grease returns to the Balor almost 30 years after its first performance in the Twin Towns.

The plot of the perennial favourite is surely familiar to everyone: After enjoying a summer romance, high school seniors Danny Zuko and Sandy Young are unexpectedly reunited when she transfers to Rydell High. Their joy is short-lived, however, as greaser gangs the T-Birds and Pink Ladies come between them.

Directed by Caroline Bell, and choreographed by Michael Duffy and Zara Gillespie, the show features such classic songs such as Grease, Summer Nights, Hopelessly Devoted To You, and You’re The One That I Want, delivered by a live house band under the leadership of Seamus Curran.

The cast includes Meagan Lucas as Sandy, Daniel Browne as Danny, Aoife Browne as Rizzo, Michael Duffy as Kenickie, Zara Gillespie as Frenchy, John Clay as Doody, Hannah Doogan as Jan, Thomas Slevin as Rogery, Lara Duffy as Marty and Dillon Doherty as Sonny.

Tickets for Grease are €12 for adults, €10 for children, and are available from the Balor box office on 0749131840, or online at www.balorartscentre.com
