A newly-formed team has been set up and will host trials on Sunday, January 11, from 10am-1pm in Aileach FC’s indoor training pitch in Burnfoot.

The Donegal-Derry Vipers club is already up and running thanks to the work of Donegal natives Cathal Curran and James Fox.

The club is the brainchild of Curran, who hails from Kildrum, and Moville native Fox and their aim is to have the Donegal-Derry Vipers playing in IAFL (Irish American Football League) 2 next season.

“We are a newly setup Irish American Football Team, running as a cross boarder team between Donegal and Derry called the DonegalDerry Vipers or the DDV’s for short,” read a statement from the club.

“We have recently been accepted into the IAFL (Irish American Football League), which has around 20 other teams including the Tyrone Titians and Belfast Trojans to name a few.

“This is full contact Irish American Football. We are searching for players and to get the word out there about where we are based and what we are about.

“We have had over 80 emails now from potential players and have appointed an experienced American Manager called Jason Brock who has been living in Buncrana for nine years.

“Our website has had over 7,000 hits and a short video we posted to our Facebook page has had around 2,000 views so far in a couple of hours.

“There is interest in the sport out there but its just a matter of getting of to the right start.”

The IAFL includes a number of teams like the Belfast Trojans, Carrickfergus Knights, Cork Admirals, Craigavon Cowboys, Dublin Rebels, Trinity College, UCD, UL Vikings, West Dublin Rhinos, Dublin Dragons, Drogheda Lightning, Meath Bulldogs, Mullingar Minotaurs, North Kildare Reapers, Waterford Wolves, Tyrone Titans, Dundalk Mavericks, Galway Warriors and the South Kildare Soliders.

Ryan McKinley from Newtowncunningham is looking after the club’s strength and conditioning ahead of their launch, while Johnny Loughery from Letterkenny is the physiotherapist.
