McCarthy rumours are a non-runner
James McCarthy's was one of the names making gossip columns before the closure of the January transfer window with Chelsea rumoured to have been planning a beat-the-deadline swoop for the 20-year-old.
In the end, there was no truth in the story that appeared in a Sunday tabloid newspaper linking McCarthy, who qualifies for Ireland as his late grandfather Packie Coll was from Gweedore, with the Premier League champions for a fee in the region of 6m.
McCarthy, though, will be on international duty next week with Noel King's U-21s, who have an upcoming friendly against Cyprus on Wednesday at the GSZ Stadium in Larnaca. Johnny Dunleavy from Ballybofey, who is currently on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers to Barnet and made his first league appearance last Saturday, is also in the squad, as is Shane Duffy from Everton.
