St Eunan's College bowed out of the U-14 Corn na nOg on Tuesday afternoon at Beragh, Co Tyrone, when they went down to last year's U-13 champions Patrick's College from Cavan.
St Patrick's played with a strong wind in the first half and Christopher Flanagan was the only St Eunan's point-scorer as his side went in 0-4 to 0-1 in arrears. That wasn't the worst of starts and when Patrick Diver scored at the start of the second period there was some reason for optimism.
The Letterkenny school, who were playing in the U-14A competition at the quarter-final stage for the first time in their history, went into the game with a number of players. Most notably, Jason Quinn, David Tyrell and Ryan Toner were forced absentees as only 20 from the 30-man panel togged.
The second half was a fraught affair with the ball in the middle third for long spells, but Patrick's kept their noses in front and a goal 15 minutes from time, the writing was on the wall. St Eunan's kept plugging away and did score late points through Cormac Callaghan, Ronan Dorrian and Ryan Rainey.
St Eunan's: Sean Daffan; Michael Friel, Darragh McWalters, Ciaran Maloney; Ronan Dorrian (0-1), Sean McDonagh, Kieran McPherson; Patrick Diver (0-1), Conall O'Boyle; Michael Patton, Ryan Rainey (0-1), Kealan O'Donnell; Oisin Shields, Cormac Callaghan (0-1), Christopher Flanagan (0-1).
