Burt no match for Bredagh in one-sided Ulster clash

Burt, well beaten by Bredagh at O'Donnell Park

As expected, a second big championship game in two days proved beyond Burt as they lost out against Bredagh of Down in Sunday’s Ulster Intermediate Club Championship first round tie at O’Donnell Park, Letterkenny.

Burt . . . 0-3

Bredagh (Down) . . . 2-10

Coming less than 24-hours after their Donegal Intermediate Final replay win over Milford, this was always going to be a difficult test for Burt.

They were up against a Down team who won their county final back at the end of September and looked much the fresher side.

Burt may have been up against it, but they worked hard throughout, although disappointingly, they failed to muster a point from play over the hour.

Bredagh were three points up within five minutes with Alan Davidson helping himself to two quality early scores.

He would end the first half with four points, all but one coming from play, as Burt struggled to cope with the pace and sharpness of the Bredagh front-line.

Burt carried little threat coming forward and their only scores in a one-sided first half, both came from frees with Joe Boyle converting.

Bredagh, however, were always in control and they struck for their opening goal on 23 minutes when from a brilliantly worked move, Davidson’s pass released Conor Francis in on goal and he beat Burt keeper Kevin McDermott with a fine finish.

The Down men continued to enjoy the better of things after half time but playing into a stiff breeze, they didn’t find scores as easy to come by.

Burt reduced the deficit to seven when Paul McHugh kicked a ‘45 between the posts eight minutes after the restart.

However, Bredagh eventually responded with a well taken score of their own on 47 when Emmett Costello found his range from 35m.

That left Bredagh 1-8 to 0-3 in front going into the final quarter and they were never in trouble after that. Their second goal eventually arrived three minutes from the finish when man-of-the-match Davidson palmed the ball to the net.
