A fantastic score on Sunday last from our Captain Donal Boyle as he went round in 4 under par to card 42pts and win The Cope sponsored competition. His round actually equals the course record and but for a bogey on the 17th he would have created a new one, super play. Tony Forrestal was second and Jim O'Donnell was third, both shooting impressive 39pts.

Ray Gallagher won the Gross while Gerard McElwee with 22pts and Noel Maguire with 20pts got the 9's. Well done to all our prize winners and thanks to The Cope for their sponsorship.

This Sunday's competition is sponsored by Danny Minnie's Restaurant. Ballybofey and Stranorlar Ladies

In the year 1994 Ita Cleary, a prominent member of Ballybofey & Stranorlar Golf Club, came up with the idea of starting a Countywide Matchplay competition which would also include our neighbours, Strabane and City of Derry. At a time when lady golfers could only be associate members of any club, it was a very forward thinking move by Ita.

The completion was named after Maire O'Donnell of Donegal Golf Club in honour of her achievements in the game through her remarkable golfing career. This competition was established to promote competitive ladies' golf among neighbouring clubs to be inclusive of all lady golfers and to include every handicap range and to provide enjoyment for all those taking part. It has come to pass that this is a very popular team to play in and the competition for places is fierce. The success of the competition is reflected in the continued support from the participating clubs year after year. Many friendships have been forged between members of neighbouring clubs as a result of playing in this highly enjoyable format of golf which is 4BBB with five pairs from each club and it is knockout. Ita got a Committee together with Nellie McHugh of Letterkenny as Secretary and Sheila Doherty of Cruit Island as Treasurer. Ita and her team retired after 20 years of running the show and the Committee now consist of Darragh McGowan of B & S, Chairperson, Gemma Doherty (nee Hegarty) of Greencastle as Secretary and Helen O'Shea of Donegal Golf Club as Treasurer. The final this year was played between Ballybofey & Stranorlar and Narin/Portnoo. B & S secured 1.5 matches away to Portnoo and on the final leg last Saturday at B & S golf club, Portnoo won 3 matches to emerge the winners.

The Portnoo ladies were absolutely delighted as this is their first win in the 22 years of the tournament and much deserved as they fielded an excellent team. May their celebrations be long and enjoyable.

Letterkenny

Congratulations to Cat 4 member Adrian Daly [26] who, having returned the winning score of 36pts in the Wednesday 28th Open at Barnhill, followed on with an even better return of 40pts to win the Saturday 1st October Open and his ‘double’. Having recorded 21pts over the outward nine on both days, Saturday’s front nine included a ‘blank’ at 4th but an assured 19pts on back nine gave him a one point winning margin over John Doran [5], runner-up with 39pts.

In third place was John Mc Glynn [18] with 37pts while Eamon Mc Glinchey [6] picked up the gross prize with 31pts gross.

Sunday 2nd Confined competition saw two of the most hard-working and improved members of the club vying for top spot and it was Minor League team stalwart Mark Cohen [19] who took the honour by virtue of B.O.T. from Anthony Delap [16]. Taking the turn at one over ‘2’s’, 19pts, back-to-back double bogeys at 14th and 15th almost had Mark lose out but a ‘fighting’ birdie at par three 16th gave him 20pts on inward nine and the win.

It was great to notice that there were over fifty [50] cat 4 members taking part in last week’s competitions.

A Letterkenny Golf Club team, under the captaincy of P.J. Sweeney and known as 'Furey's Futters', will take part in a challenge match v Castle Dargan G.C. on Saturday, 15th October, tee-off at 12.30pm with a 'meet & greet' arranged for approximately 11.45am.

A reminder that the social club ‘card’ season has resumed on Wednesday nights at 8pm, everyone welcome. Don’t forget the Night at the Races taking place on Friday, 28th October.

Dunfanaghy

We had yet another weekend of great golf at Dunfanaghy Golf Club. Our Mexican Scramble proved to be a great success on Saturday. Well done to Rory O'Hare and his team who won the Ryder Cup and stripped Gerald Dalton and his team of retaining their 2014 title. Unfortunately the European team did not retain their title against the Americans either.
Next Sunday is the Brian McGinley Memorial and the time sheet is now in operation. Nice to see our Monthly Monday Senior Competition back again, the next one will take place on Monday, 17th October.

Donegal

As the European dominance of the Ryder Cup came to an end on Sunday, one man, Thomas Pieters made a big impression, being the best preforming golfer of the weekend with 4 points from his 5 matches. And in the absence of an invite from Darren Clarke, Eamon Cassidy went on to be the Pieters of Murvagh on Sunday with an impressive score of 36pts leaving the rest of the field in his wake.

The Patrick Reid and runner- up of the day with 34 pts was Conal Cooke. Michael Neary and Mark Butler shared the minor places with 33 pts each and Francie Brogan took the gross .

The Mixed Matchplay is nearing the Quarter finals, make sure your match is played on time.

On the Junior front, Joseph Timoney, for his persistence and skill earned himself the Junior Golfer of the Year title for the second year in a row. Well done Joseph.

Drum Bar Golf Society

Congratulations to Paul Dolan who was the winner of the Drum Bar Golf Society’s Captain’s Prize on Saturday.

We had 27 players taking part in our captain, Jim Donnellan’s big day at Barnhill in Letterkenny, and in beautiful sunshine, it was Paul’s excellent score of 39 points which claimed first prize.

The golf was just one part of a very enjoyable day for all the society members. Jim was a great captain this year and at the presentation of prizes in the Drum Bar on Saturday night, he delivered a wonderful speech. Well done Jim on a fantastic day.

The results were: 1st Paul Dolan, 2nd Hughie Kelly, 3rd, Cathal Sheridan; Ladies, Margo Birmingham. Front 9, Sylvie Henry, Back 9 Padraig Monnelly. Category 1, Paddy Delap, Category 2 Peter McGrath, Category 3 Columba Crawford.

Longest drives, Brian Wilson and Mary Rose Dullaghan. Nearest the pin, Damien Judge.

Barney Reilly was also presented with his 2015 Golfer of the Year Trophy and was a very popular winner as well as singer!

The captain’s prize took place a short time after the funeral of our dear friend and fellow society member Stephen Sterritt.

It was with great sadness that we paid farewell to Stephen who died recently in Dublin. He was buried in Gortlee Cemetery in Letterkenny last Tuesday.

Stephen was a long-time member of the Drum Bar Golfing Society and was also a great golfer. He was a true gentleman and will be sadly missed by us all. Our sympathies and thoughts are with his wife Catherine and family and many friends in Dublin and especially here, in Dooen Glebe, Letterkenny and Donegal.

May he rest in peace.
