Seamus Coleman captained Everton for the first time on Tuesday night, but it proved a bitter-sweet experience for the Killybegs man.
The Premiership side, going so well in the league this season, were dumped out of the EFL Cup by Norwich City at Goodison Park.
The Championship side claimed a 2-0 victory in their 3rd round tie.
For Coleman, being handed the captain’s armband, was a special moment.
"I came over here seven years ago on a two-year trial, as I looked at it. So to captain Everton seven years later is a massive honour and, something positive to take out of the night and something I will always remember.
"I will look back at it in time and say I was proud to captain Everton."
Meanwhile, Greencastle’s Roma McLaughlin made her senior competitive debut for the Republic of Ireland senior women’s side on Tuesday.
Roma came on as an 82nd minute substitute as Ireland lost 1-0 to Portugal at the Tallaght Stadium in their final Euro qualifier.
