It will be a night of nostalgia and celebration when former players, friends and football colleagues join together to celebrate the contribution to the game of one of the county’s footballing stalwarts, Fr. Michael Sweeney.
A special event is taking place in the Silver Tassie Hotel in Letterkenny on Friday night, September 30th.
Players from teams managed by Fr. Mick during a quite amazing managerial career will gather together to honour a man who has given so much to the game in his native county.
One of the organisers, Paul Anthony McFadden, who won an All Ireland schools title on one of Fr. Mick’s PCC Falcarragh teams, said the event will be like a reunion.
“There has been fantastic interest from players from so many teams,” he said.
“The tickets have been in great demand. There are still tickets available but you can be sure that closer to the night, they will be snapped up.”
Paul Anthony said the initial idea was to celebrate the success of some of the PCC Falcarragh teams. Fr. Mick famously led teams from the school to All Ireland success in 1977 (U16) and in 1980 and 1982 (senior).
“There were some great sides and some fine players involved in those years,” he said.
“And we all have some very special memories. I remember when we won the All Ireland in 1982, we went on to represent Ireland at the Schoolboys World Cup in 1983.
“It was held in Belgium and we ended up finishing fourth.”
Fr. Mick is also of course, still very much associated with Fanad United, and players from some of his teams at Triagh a Locha also wanted to become involved in the event.
“It took off from there,” Paul Anthony said.
“In fairness, the Fanad boys enjoyed some tremendous success at national level as well and it’s great that they’ve come on board.”
The Night of Appreciation on Friday, Sept. 30th will get underway with dinner at 8.30pm.
