GOLF ROUND UP

Another busy week on Donegal's fairways

The weather might have been too kind over the past week, but there has been plenty happening on the golf courses around Donegal.

Here's the news from the county's clubs:

dunfanaghy

With summer at an end, one would expect scores to go southward. However, the standard of golf on display last weekend was of the highest quality.

The big competition of the weekend was the Kilbrae Cup played on Sunday. The winner, playing off a handicap of 5, with a terrific score of 43 points was none other than our President Keith Lapsley. Keith's score of 2 under par gross was one of the best scores of the season and could even have been a few shots better had he sunk a number of 10-12 foot putts on the way home. In second place with a great score of 41 points was Colin Higgs. Paul Kelly won the gross while Andy Murray was third.

In Saturday's Open Singles Stableford, Graham Cummings had another victory to add to his summer collection with a great score of 41 points. Paul Smyth was second with 39 points

In Wednesday's Open Singles Stableford, one of the club's most consistent golfers, Joe Langan took first prize with 3 shots to spare. In second place was David Johnson from Letterkenny GC. Winner of the gross was Alan Simpson from City of Derry while the ever youthful Roger Green was third.

Junior Golf: On Sunday our U16s team hosted their Ballyliffen counterparts in the semi final first leg of the Donegal Boys Fourball Championship. The first pair of Conor Hanna and Luke Kelly fought their way back from a 3 hole deficit to draw level on the 17th. However, they were foiled by a great birdie from their opponents on the last. The second pair of James T Sweeney and Tom McClintock played some great golf including 4 birdies to win 4&2. The final pair of Carlos O'Reilly and Kyle McGarvey won 6 of their last 7 holes to win 5&4. With a lead of 2-1, our boys head to Ballyliffin next Saturday for the second leg. Good luck to all the boys. It would be great to see you in the final.

In our Saturday morning competition for the juveniles, we had a three ball scramble. It turned out to be very close contest but the winners by one shot were the team of Conor Neely, Cormac Hall and Michael Dolan. Cormac played some fantastic shots on his way around as did Michael however, it was Conor Neely who sank a nerve jangling eagle putt on the last to secure victory. In the cadets section, Caolan McFadden played some fantastic golf winning both first prize and shot of the day. Jack Druce won putt of the day.

Competition Results: Wednesday Open - 31st August, 1st Joe Langan 38 pts, 2nd David Johnston L/K 35 pts, Gross Alan Simpson 25 gross pts, 3rd Roger Green Snr 35 pts bot

With the weather holding up quite well, the scoring at B&S seems to be following suit, but there's one young golfer who hails from Castlefinn and regardless what the elements throw at us, he is able to master them. Conor O'Rourke has only taken up this fabulous sport a few years ago and what an impact he is making. Barely a week goes by but he is in the winners enclosure and is now even claimimg gross prizes. Conor in now down to a playing handicap of eight and leading Golfer of the Year. Keep it up young man.

Our Vice Captain Bernard Foy by the way, is making a great recovery. Although not playing golf yet, he is regularly seen at the golf club playing his part. Good to see you back Bernard.

Team News: Our Donegal League side, under the guidance of Tony Griffin, lost out in the semi final to Rosapenna in the return leg therefore knocking them out of the competition.

Donegal

Liam Farren Tool Hire sponsored our Sunday competition from the white tees and the low men came to the fore. Oliver Roche (6) shot a great 39pts to win and features in the honours list once again. Hot on his heels, John Neary (3) also shot 39pts for second. Charlie Callaghan with 38pts pipped Paul Murphy who finished fourth with 38ts and the Gross went to Darren McDaid (2) with 32 pts. Great shooting from the low handicappers.

Next Sunday the competition has been changed. We will play for the Fr Doherty Cup sponsored by Gleesons, from the white tees and the scheduled Thursday Specials event will be played the next Sunday.

Jack Nicklaus once said "The older you get the stronger the winds gets" so to help combat the effects of stronger winds, we now have a Sunday competition every Sunday from the green markers. The first running of this competition produced a winner in Donal McGill with 40pts and our sponsor of the day Liam Farren recouped some of his investment finishing second with 37pts.

The club singles matchplay has reached the semi-final stage. Will Marty Mc Garrigle psych out Hugh F Cassidy or will the persistent Hugh wear Marty out? In the other half of the draw, can front runner in the Golfer of The Year, Mark Butler, maintain his current run of form or will the experience of Eddie Mc Garrigle win out?

Now that the children are back at school, junior coaching has come to an end for the year. Junior members can still use and should use the facilities or organise their own lessons with Leslie
