Glenties man strikes gold in Europe

Donegal and Ireland has a new paddle-powered hero as Glenties man Kieran McDyre claimed gold at the European Surf kayak championships in France at the weekend.

Kieran from Maas, just outside Glenties, earned his top place finish in the “high performance” category of the prestigious event.

Kieran is an outdoor instructor based in Bundoran and has competed at the world and European championships previously but this will rank among one of his finest achievements to date.

The event took place in Mimizan France.

A delighted Kieran, the son of Denis and Elizabeth McDyre, said he did not have the opportunity to train or compete much in the last couple of years, due to work and study commitments but during the winter he got back to training with his sights set on the European Championships.

"I'm very happy with the result. I started kayaking eleven years ago and began competing five years ago. At the event the waves were small and in the final there was a long wait between waves so you had to be careful with your wave choice. I'd like to thank Zephyr Lodge, Donegal Language School and Rapid Kayaking for their support," he stated.

He said there is a special homecoming celebration during the week and he now has his sights set on the World Championships which are due to take place in Portrush next year.
