Big time basketball is on its way to Letterkenny next season with the entry of Letterkenny IT basketball team into the National Basketball League.
The LYIT team, which will draw its players from Letterkenny, Donegal Town, Omagh and Derry, will compete in Division One of the National Basketball League.
It will be the first time a team from Letterkenny compete in the National League. Donegal Town basketball men did compete for one season in the National League a number of years ago.
The team received a big boost last week with the announcement that American College Basketball stars Stephen Cantello and Jack Mackey are coming to study at the Letterkenny IT on scholarship courtesy of the Rory Foundation.
Niall McDermott, Basketball Ireland’s Regional Development Officer for the North West area, is the team coach.
“There are two leagues at national level, the Super League, which is the premier league and the first division.
“Because we are new we have to enter the first division and we are happy with that. It suits us fine because there are a lot of experienced teams in the Super League and it is going to take us time to find our feet.
“We decided to enter a team because in recent years we have seen a lot of young players from the area play at junior level for Ireland.
“Players live Sean McGettigan and the Hickey brothers, Cian and Tadgh from Letterkenny and Jason Carr from Donegal Town, have all represented Ireland at Junior level.”
LYIT will have their first National League game on October 1st at the LYIT gym.
Meanwhile, it has also been confirmed that the Letterkenny IT are set to stage next season’s National League finals, mens and womens. The finals are fixed for April of next year.
