Donegal soccer season gets underway with Brian McCormick Cup

Goalfest in opening games

The area games of the Brian McCormick Cup took place over the weekend as the Donegal League got back into action.

Letterkenny Area

Wins for Drumkeen, Lagan Harps, Drumoghill and Rathmullan Celtic.

An Anthony Browne goal was enough for Drumkeen to overcome Whitestrand United in a close encounter in St. Patrick’s Park.

Drumoghill had three goals to spare over Bonagee United, thanks to goals from Pajo Rafferty (2), Richard Moore (2), one of them from the penalty spot. Darren Ashmore netted for Bonagee.

It was all too easy for Rathmullan Celtic, who hit Kerrykeel for eight. Dara and Jude Patton gave them a half-time lead and they added six more from Eoin Sheridan, Reggie Miller, Niall Caruthers, Jude Patton and two more from Dara Patton in the second half.

Donegal Area

St. Catherine’s, Donegal Town and Cappry Rovers advanced in the Donegal Area with the game between Copany Rovers and Erne Wanderers postponed.

Colm Melaugh with two goals got the better of Letterbarrow Celtic in Tymeen, while Donegal Town went on a scoring spree against Eany Celtic on Friday night at the Hospital Field. Declan Brown (3), Gary Harron, David Graham and two from Daniel McHugh did the trick for the winners. Cathal Lowther converted a late penalty for the losers.

Gweedore Area

In the Gweedore Area, Glenea United, Gweedore United and Keadue Rovers progressed.

Glenea defeated Kilmacrennan Celtic 3-1 with goals from Chris Cannon, Darren McGeever and Tommy Rodgers, while the Kilmacrennan goal came Timmy Burke. Glenea can thank ‘keeper Joe Coll, who saved two penalties.

Gweedore United needed extra-time to overcome Cranford United when the game finished 2-2 after extra-time.

Gweedore scorers were Ciaran McFadden and Michael Barry, while Joe Gallagher and Bryan McGinley netted for Cranford. In extra-time McFadden and Barry netted again to clinch the win.

Keadue Rovers got the better of Gweedore Celtic at Screaban, going two goals ahead before Kyron Duggan pulled a goal back for Gweedore.

Lifford Area

In the Lifford Area there were wins for Ballybofey United, Deele Harps and Kildrum Tigers.

Ballybofey had a big 7-1 win over neighbours Curragh thanks to a hat-trick from Damien Glackin

Kildrum just got the better of Lifford Celtic with goals from Declan Curtis and Gary Crossan, while Sean Hamilton got the Lifford goal.
