Donegal Schoolboys/Girls have over 1,500 players playing in glorious sunshine throughout the North West in the first two days of the Hughes Insurance Foyle Cup tournament.
With age groups starting at U-9s and working up to U-19 for boys and for the females they have U-11, U-13 and Seniors.
Starting at the youngest age group with the U-9s, we have seven teams involved. In group A Illistrin FC are flying with full points from four games without conceding a goal. In the same group, we have Ballyraine FC on six points from 3 with their only defeat which was a narrow one to their neighbours Illistrin FC. Group B has Swilly Rovers with a win and two defeats.
FS Eastdon Academy from the Finn Valley area have entered two teams at this age group with the team in Group C losing their three games but in Group D the County have three teams FS Eastdon are sitting nicely with 7pts, Lagan Harps have 4pts and Letterkenny Rovers have 3pts from three games. Another new Academy in Kilmac are in third position in group E with 5pts from three games.
The U-10s have 11 teams from the Donegal Schoolboy area and in group A we have both FS Eastdon and Killea FC flying the flag. Both have played five games with 4pts & 0pts respectively. Kilmac Academy have 4pts from 3 games in Group B. Milford Utd have a tough group C and have 1 pt from 3 games. Lagan Harps and Lifford Celtic have 3pts and 0pts from five games in Group D. Ballyraine Utd are in mid-table in Group E with 4pts. In F, Drumkeen Utd have a 100% record from three games. FS Eastdon have 4pts in Group G and their third side at this age group have 0pts in Group H in which Illistrin FC are sitting proudly on top with full pts from three games. At U11s we have six teams in action, South Donegal League are in A section and has played five with 5pts, Ballybobey Utd are going nicely in Group B with 7pts from three games. Group D looks like the group of death with 3pts separating five teams after three games with Lagan Harps well placed with 4pts. Kilmac are in second spot in group E with two wins and a loss. Letterkenny Rovers are joint top of group F with 12pts but has played a game more than the joint leaders. FS Eastdon are in group H with 3pts from three games.
These next age groups are where the County Schoolboy Leagues come into play. In U-12 we have six teams involved with all having played two games at present. The County side managed by Peter McHugh are on top of group A with full pts. In group B, we have the Letterkenny/NW area side who drew the first game and lost to a very good Glenavon side yesterday. In group D, the East Donegal League have held their own with 4pts and sitting in 2nd spot. South Donegal League are in 2nd spot also with 3pts in group E. Finn Harps are bottom of a tough group H with zero pts. At U13 level, We have the Gerry Crossan managed County squad who won their first two games in their group and Liam Porter who manages Finn Harps who have four pts from two games.
The U-14s have only one game played so it’s early to call but in group A, Letterkenny Rovers had a good point yesterday with FD Suomi. In group B, Finn Harps had a good 4-0 victory over Institute. Castlefin Celtic had a late narrow defeat with Glenavon. Donegal Schoolboys were unlucky to get beat by Glasgow Celtic by the narrowest of margins in which Conor Black was outstanding. Lifford Celtic got defeated by Crusaders 5-2.
At U-15s, the county’s new manager Steve Coll started off Group C with convincing wins over Newington FC and Ballycastle Utd scoring ten goals in the process. Finn Harps have zero pts from their opening two games although the first defeat was a narrow one against Norwich City.
At U-16 level, Donegal under Pat Ward, opened their account with a 5-0 victory over Ballymoney Utd. Finn Harps defeated Maiden City 2-1 in their opener also. At 17 level, Letterkenny Rovers had two narrow defeats with Drumkeen winning one and losing one. Derry City have full pts from two with a big supply of Donegal players. At 19s, Only Kildrum are the Donegal representatives with 1pt from two games. Derry City have again a large supply of Donegal based players with full points.
At U-11 level for the girls, we have already reached the Semi Final stages where both Donegal Girls league went undefeated but now must play each other in the first semi final with the winners down to play either Foyle Belles or Sion Swifts. FS Eastdon are playing for 3rd/4th place in the plate and Kilmac Academy play in the rosebowl final against Bangor. At U-13 level , Donegal Girls play Sion Swifts with the winners meeting the winners of the two Inishowen league teams. Donegal Girls 2nds playing Killen Rangers in the plate. In group A of the senior ladies, Bonagee Utd got defeated in both games but put up a great fight against their more experienced opponents. In the other Group, Lagan Harps got surprised when losing to Illies Celtic and must now beat Derry City to qualify for the final.
