Paul Conroy (Galway) and Austin Gleeson (Waterford) have been named the GAA/GPA Opel Players of the Month for June in football and hurling respectively.
Both players were pivotal in leading their counties to provincial finals and saw off stiff competition to claim the accolades, awarded to them by the inter-county playing body.
Donegal’s Ryan McHugh had been short-listed for the football award, having played an instrumental role in Donegal’s commanding victory over Fermanagh in Donegal’s Ulster Championship quarter-final, before providing the spark Donegal required to beat Monaghan in the sides’ semi-final replay.
McHugh would have been the second individual award-winner from Donegal this month, after midfielder Odhran MacNiallis picked up the Ulster GAA Writer’s award for June last Monday. Both men will look to continue their fine form in this year’s Ulster Championship as they face Tyrone in this Sunday’s title decider at Clones.
Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael Aogán Ó Fearghail said, “Congratulations to Paul and Austin on being honoured with this award – an accolade made all the more significant by the fact that they have been chosen by their peers.”
Dessie Farrell, Chief Executive of the GPA added, “Congratulations to Paul and Austin on their contributions to their respective counties’ successes last month. Thanks to the players who selected the winners, to the nomination group who compiled the shortlist and to Opel for their continued support for the GAA/GPA All-Stars Awards scheme.”
