Portsalon and Bundoran golf clubs get set for open week

There's a busy time ahead at Portsalon and Bundoran Golf Clubs which host their Open weeks over the coming days.

Hopefully the weather will pick up as both clubs have organised an exciting programme of golf for members and visitors alike.

For more on those Open Weeks and more, here's a round-up from all our clubs:

Dunfanaghy ladies

Mr President, Keith, entertained the ladies in style on Saturday, catering for everything except the weather, but who can deal with that!

There was talk of reducing the competition to 14 holes but as the day went on, the weather improved and most of us played the 18. Congratulations to Gillian on the lovely array of prizes.

First prize was won by resident flower arranger Janice Doherty (29) 35 pts, 2nd another gardener, Jill McCorkell (22) 32 pts, Gross Emma Forbes (5) 26 pts, 3rd Ellen Rodgers 12) 32 pts, 4th Olivia Moore (15) 31 pts, 1st 9 Margaret Roarty (24) 18 pts BOT, 2nd 9 Moira Irwin (18) 16 pts, CSS 33 pts.

Thank you again to Gillian and Keith, the prizes will be presented on President's night July 16th.

Last Tuesday's scramble was won by Mary McFadden, Breda Conneff and Sandra McGinley with a score of 66.

Unfortunately, the ladies were not able to win enough matches against the Carnalea team, so there's plenty of time now to catch up on the club match play competitions.

This Saturday we play the Centenary Cup, kindly sponsored by Barbara Eakin.

Best wishes to John for a speedy recovery from all the ladies. Time sheet on the web site or ring the office. Sunday is our sponsored walk in aid of club refurbishment and Our Lady's Hospital for Sick children in Crumlin. If you have not already done so, please return all sponsorship cards to the treasurer or the office before Sunday. Registration for those without a card takes place at the Golf Club between 12.30 and 1.30. When everyone returns to the club house there will be a BBQ and raffle so bring along your friends.

Next week is President's week with a Mixed Foursome competition on Thursday, a scramble on Friday and the Gents' President's prize on Saturday 16th.

On Saturday the ladies are playing in the Open Four Ball in Cloughaneely at 11.30 - please put your names on the list in the ladies' locker room.

Captain's Day: Saturday week 16th July sees our Captain Mr Seán Devenney invite all our members to play for the Captain's Prize. B&S are the only local club (indeed one of possibly only a handful in Ireland) to have the Captains Prize over two days. This makes for a great weekend of pure excitement when we all watch the leaderboard in the clubhouse to see who might slip into an early lead, or who is the overnight leader and check eagerly to see if they themselves are out in the last 24 on Day 2 as one of the leaders. Then of course as tradition goes the Captain and his guests will wine and dine before a night of mighty craic and dancing.

Team news: Our All Ireland Fourball Team travelled to Down Royal Golf Club on Sunday last. They found the going tough leaving four and a half matches behind them so they have it all to do next Sunday at home.

The Jimmy Bruen Captain Tony Fullen takes his troops up to the lovely Newtownstewart Golf Club (neutral venue) on Sunday to take on Faughan Valley. With a new look team, Tony is seeking revenge as they lost to Faughan near the same stage of the competition two years ago. As this is the knockout stages, it's a must win to progress. Good luck to both teams.

That wizard with the clubs Marian O'Sullivan (10) bagged first place with 36pts. Runner-up was Anne Cannon (13) scoring 34 pts.

Well done to all the ladies in both competitions, many congratulations.

The Challenge Cup team, captained by Margo Bermingham, had a formidable task on their return leg in Barnhill against Enniskillen. They needed to secure five matches to progress in the competition. Last Thursday, they did just that, and won all five matches. They now progress to the quarter final where they meet Belvoir Park Belfast. Heartiest congratulations to the Captain, team and panel.

Captained by Ann Condon, the Intermediate team, with three matches under their belt, travelled to Kilrea on July 2nd. But sadly, despite great spirit and effort, they were unable to overcome a strong Kilrea team.

The Junior Cup team with Marian O' Sullivan at the helm, played away to Belvoir Park on Friday July 1st and secured 3 matches. The return leg at Barnhill against a very strong Belvoir Park team proved too much for the brave and spirited Letterkenny ladies.

The ladies club would like to thank all the teams and caddies, for their enthusiastic participation in representing our club, the fights fought and the distances travelled. To those remaining in the fray, our very best wishes to them in their upcoming competitions.

Ciaran O'Reilly made his debut into the winner's enclosure in second with 37pts, beating Doubles Match Play champion Liam Cassidy into third on B.O.T. Steady as ever, Rory Lenihan is on his way to earning a tour caddie spot after earning fourth, also on 37pts. Darren McDaid made a foray into the gross section with 30 pts.

Last Friday Mark Butler, hot on the back of his Captain's Day victory with Rene Brogan, took the honours in the V.D.P. fundraiser.

On the team front on Friday in Letterkenny, the Donegal League team snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

On Saturday the Fred Daly team, in dreadful conditions, bowed out to a stronger Lisburn squad but like the Icelanders in the Euros, made it further in the competition than ever before, well done boys.

Still fighting fit however, under the combined wisdom of Murphy /McHardy management, the Donegal Seniors team head north to Buncrana on Saturday next for their away leg after posting a healthy 4:1 result at home. Also on Saturday the Irish Junior Foursomes team do battle in the qualifying round in Lisburn. Best of luck to these teams.

Letterkenny Golf Club notes on page 61.

Following the excitement of President’s day, it was the club’s juniors who took to the course on Monday last and showing his potential once again was Michael Shiel [18], returning a magnificent 46pts. In runner-up spot was Philip Cassidy [11] with 34pts.

Wednesday 29th saw the annual Highland Motors Open and winning out on a 4-way B.O.T. was Adrian Mc Clafferty [20] with 41pts to relegate Anthony Delap [17] to runner-up spot by virtue of countback on last six holes. In third spot was Donegal League and ‘Seniors’ team talisman Peter Dobson [9] and in fourth place was our junior member of the moment Michael Shiel, now playing off 13 handicap.

Sunday 3rd hosted the first open of July, sponsored by Mc Gettigan’s Gala, and taking centre stage was single handicapper Con Boyce [4] with 41pts and a card reading of fifteen pars, two birdies and one bogey. Running a close second on 40pts was another single handicapper Kieran Sweeney [6]. John Paul Clarke [11] was third with 39pts and gross prize was collected by Bryan Margey [7] with birdies at 1st and 7th giving him repetitive nines of two over gross for a 32pts gross finish. Visitors prize was won by Paul Given [19] with 38pts.

Cat 4 member Dermot Higgins celebrated 4th July in style by winning the Monday 13 hole competition with 25 pts on bot from Pat McGarrigle, also on 25 pts. Cat 4 members are reminded that Mr. Ivan Fuery’s Captain’s prize will be played for on Monday next, 11th July.

Team news: Letterkenny Golf Club's Donegal League team, led by Liam Wiseman, pulled off what most would have thought was the impossible when they came back from the jaws of defeat to progress to the next round of this competition.

Trailing five matches to nil and 15 holes down from the away leg against a very fancied Murvagh GC, Liam instilled some backbone into the team with his own fighting qualities as team captain and the team duly responded with a five matches to nil and 18 holes victory.

The Eamonn O' Carroll led Ulster Cup team travelled to Shandon Park GC on Sunday last with the knowledge that a three match victory would see them through to the next round outright but the home team proved a very competitive adversary and with just 1&1/2 matches and one hole won it was a tense finish for the team's anchorman Shay Henry who chipped it dead on 17th to win his match 2up and help Ulster Cup team to qualify by virtue of a three hole advantage.

Congratulations also to the Ulster 4Ball team captained by Chris Nee who won their first leg at Barnhill v. Enniskillen GC by 4 matches to 1. The team pairings of Sam Hegarty & Lester Speer [5&4], Tony Duffy & Mark Cohen [4&2], Tom Mc Donagh &Alaister Boreland [2&1], Oisin Mc Avinney & Malcolm Crawford [4&2] and the very unlucky Eugene Mc Keever & Vincent Bianconi who, despite pars at two of the last three holes for a commendable fightback, lost 1down.

With less than two weeks to go before our third major of the year, competitions would like to remind everyone that only those members who have played in four [4] or more club competitions in 2016 are eligible to play for the main Captain's Prize.

For those who have not been able to play in four [4] club competitions, there will be a non-qualifiers competition on the day for a non-qualifiers prize.

Members are also reminded that tee-time bookings are made for drawn partners to play within the hour booked. Draw will take place on Thursday 14th.

Competitions are ongoing at Barnhill with the Friday Open Stableford continuing followed by the DMG MOTORS sponsored Open on Saturday 9th and the confined [members] competition on Sunday.
