Dunfanaghy Golf Course was in magnificent condition last weekend for the staging of, what has now become, the annual club Pro Am. Congratulations to our greenkeeper Paul McGinley and his team for the superb condition they had the course in for the two day event. Over 50 of the country's top professional golfers travelled to Dunfanaghy for one of the most popular tournaments on the Irish PGA circuit. The competition got underway at 7 am on Saturday morning with the first group of golfers on the tee. In addition to the professional competition, there was also a team event in which members and visitors could take part. One professional was then assigned to each team of four. While there were a few heavy showers over the weekend, the sun shone brightly most of the time and, as a result, the scoring was of the highest quality. There were a number of former European Tour players in the field. One of those was Simon Thornton who had two great rounds of four under par to finish in third place. David Higgins must have thought he had won the tournament with rounds of -5 and -4 to finish on -9. However, it was Neil O'Briain of Old Conna Golf Club who won the 2016 Pro Am. Neil led from start to finish with scores of -5 and -6 to win by two shots on -11 and take home the winner’s cheque for €1,750. In his acceptance speech, Neil complimented the club on an exceptionally well organised event and assured us that he would be back next year to defend his title.
Our own professional Seamus McMonagle also deserves tremendous credit. Seamus was very much in the mix after the first round finishing on three under par. However, a couple of mistakes early in the second round took him out of contention for the top prize. Nevertheless Seamus finished in a very creditable tenth position.

Con Boyce (playing off 4) produced the round of the week so far on Sunday when three birdies over the closing five holes helped him to a one over round of 73 and a nett 69. It was enough to give him victory in the CoLab LYIT Singles Stroke competition on a BOT from Donal Murphy (16) who was second and Kevin Rafferty (7) third. Liam Sweeney (12) was one shot further back in fourth.
On Monday, the Hickey Clarke and Langan Open was won by Kevin Hensey who made light of the wet conditions to shoot 40 points. In second place was Cian Harkin with 38 pts. Joseph Coyle won the gross prize with 37 pts and Dermot Dunleavy, also with 37pts, was fourth.
