Russian heartbreak for Brett McGinty at the European Youth Championships

It was a case of Russian heartbreak once more for Donegal boxer Brett McGinty at the European Youth Boxing Championships in Anapa, Russia.

The St Johnston teenager suffered defeat in his quarter-final bout at the championships on Friday when losing to Gurgen Madayan from Armenia, just one win away from the medals.

The Armenian was the unanimous winner of a high quality encounter at 60 kg that saw the boxers go toe to toe from the first bell for the most of the three rounds.

It was heartbreak for McGinty, who had defeated Madayan at the European Schoolboys Championship in 2012, also in Anapa.

McGinty, a bronze medal winner in 2012, also suffered a controversial defeat in the European Youth Championships in 2014 when losing to Croatian Mladam Sobjeslavski.

A Commonwealth silver medal winner last November in Samona, the Oak Leaf BC boxer went into the championship in good form and was a convincing 3-0 winner over Mladam Sobjeslavski in the first round.
