Ulster Schools Athletics Finals success: South and South Donegal schools athletes performed with distinction when the Ulster Post Primary Schools athletics finals were held at the 6Antrim Forum on Friday and Saturday. Five athletes from the region were outright winners, in an event that attracted over one thousand qualified competitors from five provincial regions.
Christopher O'Donnell, Magh Ene College Bundoran, ran a outstanding time of 48.57secs in the Senior Boys 400m. The Grange/North Sligo athlete broke a fifteen years old record and was awarded the Mellon Cup for the top male performance of the championship.
Caolan O'Callaghan, Abbey Voc School, was in a class of his own in clearing 1.90m/PB and winning the Senior Boys High Jump. Later the Donegal Town man/Tir Chonaill AC athlete finished 4th in the Triple Jump. School and club mates Chloe Masterson and Anna Reibling made it a treble winning medal celebration for the AVS when Chloe won silver in the Senior Girls Hammer and Anna bronze in the Junior/U15 Girls Pole Vault.
St Catherine's, Killybegs, also had two athletes getting onto the winning podium. Dylan Kearns, in the Inter Boys was impressive in winning the Javelin with 46.55m while Michella Byrne, in a closely fought the U14/minor girls Long Jump got out to 4.97m to claim silver.
Colaiste na Carraige's Caoimhe Byrne was a winner in the Senior Girls Pole Vault with a best of 2.70m while newcomer to the sport Eoin Sharkey, St Columbas Glenties was involved in one of the most exciting and closely fought finals of the championships. Eoin and Sam Rutherford, Sullivan Upper, Belfast 'dead heated' in the U14/Minor Boys 75m Hurdles - time 12.42secs. Incidentally the third athlete was timed at 12.45secs. Thank god for electronic timing.
All the above athletes will now prepare for the All Ireland Schools Track & Field final in Tullamore on the June Bank Holiday weekend.
Other notable local performances from the finals included; Marcus Mc Gowan (Colaiste Colmcille): 7th in Senior Boys 5km in a time 18mins 50secs, Laoise Mc Gonagle (St Columba's Glenties): 8th in Minor Girls 75m Hurdles, Eve Travers (AVS): 7th in Senior Girls Triple Jump, Louise Doherty (Colaiste na Carraige): 8th in Junior Girls Long Jump.
Universities International: Best of luck club athletes to Kate McGowan, DCU/400m Hurdles and Barry Quigg, NUIG/High Jump on Saturday in the International Universires match in Kilmarnock.
Road race: The club host a 5k road race on Friday evening at 7.30pm in Donegal Town. The event is part of the Donegal Grand Prix, is supported by sponsorship from local businesses.
