Naomh Conaill get the better of Ardara

Naomh Conaill are celebrating a third Donegal Division One Minor League title following Wednesday night’s final win over Ardara in Dunkineely.

Naomh Conaill 2-11

Ardara 1-10

The winners were the better side throughout but Ardara were more competitive than in the recent Southern final. Naomh Conaill won that game by 15 points, 4-13 to 1-7.

Naomh Conaill lined out without county minor Eoghan McGettigan who missed the game with a foot injury.

After an even enough first half, Naomh Conaill led by two points 0-7 to 0-5 at half-time after they led by four points at one stage in the half. Paul McGuinness, Jack Flannery, Kieran Gallagher and J Boyle were Naomh Conaill’s first half scorers while Niall McCrossan (3), Danny Walsh and Simon Breslin raised the Adrara white flags.

While McCrossan reduced the margin to one on the resumption, Naomh Conaill were soon on their way. McGuinness responded for Ardara before Jack Flannery struck the first of his two goals to open up a five point advantage.

And when Flannery converted from the penalty spot shortly afterwards Naomh Conaill were on their way to a first minor league crown in nine seasons.

The champions in waiting added two more points and McCrossan, Ardara’s main scoring threat, kept the Ardara side of the scoreboard ticking over before Johnny Sweeney struck a late Ardara goal for respectability.
