Athlone Town are next up for Rovers

Letterkenny Rovers return to action on Saturday night when they make the journey to play Athlone Town in the FAI Senior Cup 2nd round (7.45pm).

It's another big game for the Ulster Senior League side who will still be reeling from the 5-0 defeat by Crumlin United in Saturday's FAI Intermediate Cup final.

Team manager, Eamonn McConigley, however, insists the pressure will be off his team ahead of this weekend's match.

“It's a case of getting back up on the horse again. We've to lift ourselves after Saturday's big defeat,” he said.

“But isn't it great to be in this position? We've got a run of big matches now and okay, things didn't go to plan in Dublin, but the experience of being involved will live long in the memory for everyone.

“We've another big game now in Athlone and we're really looking forward to it.”

The manager did say that he plans a different approach to this Saturday night's tie.

“I got things wrong tactically for the game in the Aviva and I've to hold my hands up,” he said.

“But this is a completely different challenge. Nobody is expecting us to win this one and unlike last Saturday, this match doesn't have to be finished on the day.

“We know that a draw would be a good result and we could take them back to Leckview.”

There are injury concerns in the Rovers camp following last weekend's cup final and McConigley said he'll see how those players hampered by problems come through training tonight.

“We were all so disappointed after Saturday, but one thing we can take from it is that it was a wonderful experience for the players, the supporters and everyone connected with the club.”

Rovers travel to meet an Athlone side who have been struggling in the First Division this season. They've managed just one victory and sit second from bottom.
