Donegal Town 14
City of Derry 10
This was a very entertaining game of rugby played with great intensity with both sides leading for periods of the game.
Donegal unfortunately lost their winger Freddy Cullen after the first few minutes after an accidental collision. Iarlaith Cox was sent in as replacement.
Derry were now exerting a lot of pressure on the Donegal defence but thankfully Donegal were able to handle the pressure.
Jack Sweeney broke at pace out of the Donegal backline supported by Jack Murray. Sweeney passed the ball to Jack Murray and he crossed the try line and touched down under the posts. Aaron Mc Groary converted to leave Donegal 7 points up.
Derry kept on the pressure and were rewarded with a try in the corner to leave it 7-5 to Donegal at half time.
Derry started the brighter and they scored in the corner after 10 minutes to go 10-7 ahead.
Donegal continually attacked the Derry defence only to be continually repelled time after time. To their credit they refused to give up and got their reward 5 minutes from full time with a well worked try moving the ball through the hands from one side of the field to the other.
Jack Murray was again on the end of this move and he had lots to do this time to beat his man and score under the posts. Aaron Mc Groary duly converted to leave Donegal ahead by 4 points and the clock counting down.
Derry continued to attack the Donegal defensive line and caused a few anxious moments at the end. Thankfully Donegal hung on to win. Both teams are to be commended for serving up a very competitive and entertaining game.
