The Junior and Intermediate Scratch Cup competitions were held at Rosapenna Golf Club last weekend with some fabulous golf on show.
These were two of a number of top competitions held around the county over the past week.
Here's what's been happening at our golf clubs.
LETTERKENNY HOSPITALS SOCIETY
The Society held its first outing of 2016 at Narin and Portnoo Golf Club last week. On a day which allowed the big turn-out of members to enjoy both the beautiful scenery and excellent conditions it was the course which proved the winner with a score of 36 points from Russell McKenna taking top spot.
Eunan Mc Glynn just pipped Kevin Mc Donald for the Runner-Up spot as both returned scores of 35 points with John Doherty on 34 points making up the top four.

The Society's Annual Away Outing takes place from Monday 16th - Wednesday 18th May to the Slieve Russell Hotel and Golf Resort with 28 members due to travel. As a result of this trip the outing due to take to Dunfanaghy Golf Club on Friday 20th May has been re-scheduled for Thursday, 18th August.
The next home outing will be in Letterkenny on Monday, 20th June.
Donegal ETB Society
The Old Links course in Ballyliffin Golf Club provided a spectacular venue for Kevin Murphy’s Captain's Day. Our thanks to Ballyliffin Golf Club for a fantastic day’s golf and hospitality, all of which made for a memorable day for Kevin, his family and the members of the Society.
On the course, winner of the Captain’s Prize went to Éanna Ó Mainín with a great score of 37points. In second place was Marcel McCafferty with 36 points and third went to Tommy Greally with 34 points. Kate Doherty claimed 4th with 33pts (b.o.t.) and Captain, Kevin Murphy rounded off the top five with 33pts.
In 6th was Michael McGrath with 32pts, 7th was Eamon McDonnell on 31pts (b.o.t.), 8th Jim McGlynn with 31pts, 9th Sean Murphy on 30pts(b.o.t.) and tenth went to John Bosco Gallagher with 30pts.
The Category 4 Prize was won by Jim McGlynn. Retired Members' Prize was won by Eamonn McDonnell; Past Captains' Prize was won by Sean Murphy;
Captain’s Guest Prize was won by Pauric O’Flaherty.
With all the outings scores to date taken into consideration, the top five places in the Golfer of the Year are as follows:
1 Oliver Plunkett 114; 2 Alex Harkin 79; 3 Éanna Ó Mainín 77; 4 Deirdre O’Toole 74; 5 Cathal McGee 72.
The Magnificent 7 Competition continued and the top scores after the first 7 outings are as follows:

The Society’s next outing, the President’s Prize takes place on Saturday, 7th May in Ballybofey & Stranorlar Golf Club in honour of Donegal ETB Chairperson, Ms Bernie Mulhern.
Donegal Golf Club
The Wednesday Opens are getting very popular and are also getting difficult to win. Last week Simon Creighton with 42pts was first, John Meade was second with 40pts and Darren Williamson with 40 pts was third. Odhran Mullan (6) earned himself the gross with 30pts.
The Open Days continue every Wednesday until end of June. Can you join the list of those who tamed the monster, one of the longest courses around? If not why not come and enjoy the scenery and the crack anyway.
The Thursday Specials had the first of their 15 hole competitions and advantage was taken with the good weather with some great scoring. Winner on the day was Liam Cassidy with an excellent 35pts. The runner up was Ronan McAleavey with 31pts, who just pipped Matt Gallagher on a break of tie who was 3rd with the same score. Peter Sweeney was 4th on the day with 30pts and Liam Farren had the best 1st 9 with 20pts. The past members' winner was Captain Gerry Forde with an excellent 34pts.
On the anniversary of the 1916 Rising, Colm Campbell (Ard) made his proclaimation by shooting 39pts to win the Supervalu sponsored event. Damien Mulhern, in one of his few outings this year so far, shot an excellent 39pts also for second. Raymond Nolan, setting the stage for his upcoming Spring League match, showed no regard for his opposition as he shot an easy 38pts for third. Liam Farren building on recent success in the Thursdays, finished fourth with 38pts and Darren McDaid had no cause for complaint as he shot an excellent 36 gross pts.
Next Sunday the newly remodelled 17th will be open for play and the competition is sponsored by Dom’s Bar & Restaurant. Placing on Fairways ends on April 30th.
Team competitions are in full flight at the moment. The Ulster Fourball team under the guidance of Roy Harron was out on Sunday against Balmoral Golf Club in the first leg of their match and came away 3-2 winners on the day with all the matches very tight affairs and they are up for the return leg in a fortnight’s time.
Next Sunday the Ulster Cup team are away to Blackwood G.C. in Bangor and the Jimmy Bruen team will turn out for the qualifying in Letterkenny. The Fred Daly team are getting some practice in for their third round match against Portstewart on May 8th. Dorothy Woods is busy, between tours and training the Mixed Foursomes team for their qualifying. Good luck to all the teams.
The Ladies played in Ballyliffin G.C on Saturday in the Donegal Shield qualifying but unfortunately failed to qualify on the day.
There is a Charity 3 Ball Mixed Scramble in aid of Cancer Care West on Friday and afterwards there is a presentation night for the latest sponsored competitions. All prize-winners are asked to attend.
On Friday May 6th the club is hosting the Donegal Town FC Classic, some spots still available at €120 per team.
The is no Junior Coaching on Monday 2nd May (Bank Holiday) but resumes
every other Monday 6-7pm and Fridays for the advanced group 6-7pm .
Saturday competitions every Saturday for the Juniors and Youths also.
It was a busy week for the lady golfers. It started with the 18 hole competition sponsored by Miss Designer Golf which was played on Tues. 19th. April. Great scoring was recorded by a number of ladies, particularly the top four – 1st. Kate Gallagher (36) a wonderful 40 points, 2nd. Cathy Marren (34) 38 pts. B.O.T., 3rd. Kay Kelly (28) 38 pts., 4th. Triona Daly (28) 37 pts. Well done ladies!
The winner of the 13 hole competition played on Thurs. 21st. April was Vera Kearney (19) 27 pts.
Friday 22nd. April saw the long awaited Ladies’ Fundraiser Classic take place. Ladies and gents turned out in great numbers with 30 teams in all taking part. Some travelled from Dublin, Galway, Portsalon, Dunfanaghy, Otway, Ballybofey and Stranorlar and Rosapenna. A big thank you to them. The main sponsors were Brian McCormick, INMO Tech Ltd. Enniscrone, Tom Nolan, Reid Motors, Magees Pharmacy and DNG Estate Agents. Other sponsors included Lady Captain Dunfanaghy Mary Lafferty, Patricia McAteer, the White Harte Rathmullan and Victor Byrne, McDonalds. None of this would have happened without the hard work of Kay Kelly, ably assisted by Marian O’Sullivan. A special thank you to them and all who helped in any way.

Best ladies’ team was Kay Kelly, Joan Murphy, Veronica McAteer and Bridie Gildea 87 pts. Ladies’ nearest the pin prizewinner was Margaret Witherow and ladies’ longest drive winner was Eileen Bannan. Men’s nearest the pin prize went to Terry Farrell and men’s longest drive winner was Paul Carr. Congratulations to all!
On Saturday 23rd. April those ladies who qualified from Letterkenny travelled to Ballyliffin Golf Club to compete in the Donegal Shield. While some good scores were recorded by the Letterkenny ladies, it was Rosapenna who were the best on the day.
Ballybofey and Stranorlar Ladies
The Cookery demonstration by Martin Anderson was a great success last Thursday night. A large crowd attended and the chef, as well as giving a very practical demonstration of three quickly prepared and quickly cooked dishes, also entertained the crowd and gave some very useful tips. Two of the ladies present got to eat the end result and declared it all delicious.

Well done to the Revive Active team who played Strabane on Monday, the format being 4BBB with 3 pairs at home and two away. One match was won away and 2 at home with the 3rd called in. The team were Darragh McGowan & Josephine Stewart, Margaret McConnell & Eileen Boyce, Dolores Devaney & Mary McHugh at home. Away were Kathleen McGowan & Ann Sweeney, Lady Capt. Margaret McCrossan & Margaret Hynes. Team Capt. Eileen Reilly. Next opponents are Letterkenny who have home advantage with 3 pairs at Letterkenny. The Minor Cup team had a very convincing win against Co. Cavan winning two matches away and at home won four with the last called in. Congratulations to our Ulster Fourball team under the guidance of Frank Mc Ginley who have qualified for the next round. We wish Harry Reid and his Jimmy Bruen team the best of luck in their qualifying next weekend in Letterkenny.

The Wednesday 20th Open hosted a good turn-out and taking home the plaudits was the early season form player and Ulster Cup combatant Eugene O' Donnell  on 42pts. He had a three point winning margin over runner-up Shane Gallagher  and in third place was Jimmy Bruen panelist Eddie Margey  with 38pts..
Friday 22nd saw Letterkenny Golf Club host it's first classic of the season, the Ladies Club Fundraising Classic, and what a success that proved to be. With over 30 teams playing in favourable weather conditions, it was the mixed team of Kate Gallagher, Maura Cavanagh, Victor Byrne and Enda Mannion who took pride of place when presented with their prizes by winners' sponsor Brian Mc Cormick. With a return of 95pts, the winning quartet led second placed Eugene Gallagher, Bobby Shiels, Dessie Shiels snr. and Dessie Shiels jnr.who finished on 93pts and third placed Ed Margey, John Sweeney, Paddy O' Gorman and Jimmy Gleeson on 87pts. The Ladies team prize was won by Kay Kelly, Joan Murphy, Veronica Mc Ateer and Bridie Gildea with 87pts.
Saturday 23rd Open, kindly sponsored by Letterkenny Driving Range [The Glebe] was won by visitor James Friel  with a great return of 43pts. Driving a close second was Michael Mc Hugh  just one point behind with 42pts. In third place, albeit on a three way B.O.T., was local author Declan O' Carroll  with 39pts. Gross prizewinner was Simon Stephens  with 31 gross points.
Sunday 24th confined competition was won Hugh Gallagher  with 41pts total. Runner-up was cat 2 member Bryan Kelly  with 38ps, while Kieran Sweeney  took the gross prize 36 gross points.
Cat 4 members are coming out in force for their Monday night competitions and great to see a first time winner in this category in Richard Spratt, with 22pts from eleven holes, taking his prize on B.O.T. from last year's form player, Dermot Higgins.

The McGinley Motors sponsored Rosapenna Junior Scratch Cup took place last Saturday over the two championship links at Rosapenna. Congratulations to long time member Con Boyce who successfully defended his title with a two round total of 150 (+8) and
a one stroke margin over Brendan Roache on 151 (+9).
Third place was Denis McBride on 155 (+13). 1st nett was won by Michael Bradley (9) with 144 nett and 2nd nett was Peadar Boyce (9) with 147 nett. The 2nd round gross was won by Seamus Patton with 78 (+7) on the Old Tom Morris Links.

Congratulations to the team who travelled to Ballyliffin on Saturday to
defend their title as holders of the Donegal Shield and who managed to win to bring the Shield back to Rosapenna for another year. The winning scores were 37pts (Madge Kelly), 35pts (Orla Lenny) and 34pts (Dympna Kelly).

The winners of the Cara Pharmacy Bundoran competition last Sunday were 1st Kathleen Connolly 73, 2nd Kathleen Moran 75.
A Fashion Show will be held in the Clubhouse on Thursday, 5th May, in aid of Cystic Fibrosis, thanks to Sharon Keon of Zuba Fashions Ballyshannon and David Robinson Golf Shop Bundoran.
The club outing will take place to Slieve Russell Golf Club on Tuesday, 7th June, please put names on noticeboard in Clubhouse if intending to travel.
Next weekend the Bank Holiday stableford competition is sponsored by A.I.B. Ballyshannon.
Cruit Island played their 1st leg match against Newtonstewart on Sunday
last and had a 3.5 to 3.5 result. A mountain to climb for Team Captain
John Hyland and his team in the return leg but who knows, golf is a funny old game.
In our weekly competition sponsored by Sharkey Waste, Frank Kelly was the man in form to cement his place in Minor League Team. Danny McShea will be watching the form of high handicappers and Jim O Donnnell looks good after taking 3rd.

Glenties Golf Society
We had a large turnout at our second outing at Ballybofey/Stranorlar last Saturday. With the course in excellent condition, the good day made for some excellent scores. The decision by the handicap secretary to cut winners is reflected in four different golfers in the prizes from our first outing.
Results: 1 Pat Connaghan 43; 2 Paddy McDwyer 35; 3 Conell Keeney 34 bot; 4 John Mc Bride 34 bot. Visitors Prize Damien Connaghan 42.
Next outing is in Narin Portnoo on Saturday, 28th May.
Members are reminded that names will shortly be taken for our weekend outing to Ballyliffen on the first weekend in September.
It was a busy week at the club with a lot of activity both around the clubhouse and on the course. Well done to Fr Sylvester O’Flynn who won the Seniors Gents Open on Monday with 36 points on BOT.
In the Wednesday Open Gerry Doohan must have thought he had won with a great score of 42 points but that was bettered by Kevin McGinley who came in with a very impressive 43 points.
On Saturday Mark Caithness and Chris Byrne comfortably won the Open Scotch Foursomes with 59 points from L McCorkell and W Hamilton in second place.
The big competition of the weekend was the April Monthly Medal on Sunday where Cathal McMonagle, showing the grit and determination he is known for, finished strongly to claim first place with a score of 63 net. Cathal had a great birdie on the 17th and a par on the 18th, not only to win the Monthly Medal but also to halve a very closely fought fourball. Fergus Mullen was second with Colin Higgs in third. The gross prize went to Daniel McColgan
Winner of the Senior Boys Competition this week was Conor Hanna with a narrow one shot victory over James Sweeney in a very closely fought contest.
In the juveniles section, it was a day for some spectacular shots. Winner of shot of the day was Ben "The Power" King who managed to hit the pin with his tee shot on the 18th. Andy Ward was also a contender with his third shot into the 16th. Andy's ball landed a foot from the hole and he managed to slot home the putt for a very impressive birdie. However, nobody could live with Michael Dolan's consistent play and he eventually came out on top with a few shots to spare over Cormac Hall.
Jack Druce won the Cadets section with some fine play. Jack has worked very hard on his game all winter and was a deserving winner. Jack Hanna won shot of the day.
