All the latest from Donegal's golf clubs

On the weekend of the Augusta Masters, the golfers of Donegal recorded some impressive scores and performances of their own.

The new golfing season is now firmly up and running and among the highlights last weekend was the finals of the Gaeltacht League, hosted by Dunfanaghy Golf Club.

Here's a round-up of what's been happening.

Letterkenny ladies

Last Tuesday, April 5th saw the first medal of the year played. A great score was posted by Celia Doran who started her year on a high with a 70 nett.

There are still a few places left on the Ladies Fundraising Classic on Friday, 22nd April, so anyone who wants to enter a team can do so online. Your support would be appreciated.

Lists for the upcoming Junior, Intermediate, Minor, Challenge Cups and Mixed Foursomes are currently posted on the notice board, so any lady who wants to add her name to these panels is welcome to do so.

Please note that the Donegal Shield, postponed from 9th. April, is now rescheduled for Sat. 16th. and members are urged to enter online.

For these and all other happenings, please check the notice board at all times.

On Monday, 11th April, Marian O’Sullivan and Gabriel McNulty travelled to the Rockmount Golf Club in Belfast to take part in the North qualifier section of the Irish Pro-Am. They played very well but missed out on qualifying for the final stage in the K Club.

Finally sympathy is extended to the Crumlish family on the passing of Mary who was Lady Captain in 1961, and to Marian O’Sullivan, on the death of her cousin.

Dunfanaghy

Gaeltacht League Final: Another busy weekend at Dunfanaghy GC started with the final of the Gaeltacht league on Saturday morning. The Rosapenna team started the day with a slender lead and managed to maintain that lead after a tough battle with Gweedore and Dunfanaghy GC. Well done to the Rosapenna lads. Congratulations also to Gerald Dalton who won the individual prize, a very prestigious achievement indeed.

The golf was followed by a presentation in the clubhouse where there was a great atmosphere. Our Captain Denis Martin commended all the teams on their efforts throughout the winter before presenting the prizes.

While the sun shone brightly on Sunday, scoring was very difficult due to a very cold easterly breeze. Well done to Brian Wallace who took first place with 38 points.

Rose Gavigan and Sean Duffy jnr competed during the week in the qualifier for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Pro Am in Rockmount. In very tough conditions, they scored well but missed out narrowly on qualification for the next stage.

The committee would also like to express their thanks and gratitude to all those who helped out on “Divot Day” over the Easter Holidays. There was a great turnout and the work was completed within a couple of hours. The course will benefit greatly from this in the weeks ahead.

Junior Golf: 12 players turned up for the junior competition on Saturday morning. The cadets had a very competitive few holes with Sean Mc Bride taking the honours. This was Sean's first win and was a well deserved reward for all his hard work. Keep up the practice Sean.

In the juveniles section we had an extremely close competition but in the end it was Andy Ward who held out for a very impressive win. Andy is one of our most dedicated and consistent players. He always plays with a terrific attitude and is a fine example to the younger boys who have joined our cadets section. Well done again Andy. Congratulations also to Lucas Wood who won shot of the day with a great sand save on the 15th.

After shooting 2 under in Dunfanaghy in the Gaelteacht Alliance Captains Day the day before, and 4 under the week before in Cruit, this round beat them all as there were strong winds blowing and very tricky pin placements.

Club teams: B&S Fred Daly Team Captain Seán Carlin took the club's young guns up to Dungannon for the return leg of the first round and with a healthy lead of four matches to one. On a bitterly cold day each of the boys teed off. Ryan Griffin, playing of a handicap of 9, was matched with Jack Madden (nephew of PGA Pro Seamus Duffy and playing off a 2 handicap). Ryan put up a great fight until the last few holes as did Cormac Carr and Rourke Griffin. Seán McBride seemed to have lost his way early on in his match being five down after seven holes but after a few words (kind words) from his Team Captain, Seán changed things around and got back to one down after 13 holes. Unfortunately, he over clubbed himself on the 14th to go out of bounds and that was to end what seemed like come back of the day.

Match of the day must go to Michael Curran playing with a handicap of 16, who was to be paired with their highest handicapped golfer playing off 6 and we must remember that these are flat matches (no shots given).

Michael totally outclassed his opponent with brilliant ball striking all day and great putting to go on and win his match 5 and 4. Well done Michael.

So in the end up, the overall match was halved and Dungannon got through on a narrow holes difference.

Good luck to Dungannon in the next round.

Ulster Cup: John McMenamin took his new look Ulster Cup Team to Cavan Golf Club and came home with three matches out of seven which is a great result away from home. Not sure when this home leg is scheduled for but if you log into our Facebook page, we will keep you inforned.

A Cookery Demonstration by award-winning chef Martin Anderson will be held in the clubhouse on Thursday, 21st April. Doors open at 8pm. Tickets €10 (includes a glass of wine).

Letterkenny

Saturday 9th April will be long remembered by Cat 3 member Gabriel McNulty [19] for, not only did he win the Open competition but he also qualified to represent the club in the knock-out stage of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Pro-Am, his playing partner being lady member Marian O' Sullivan. With a topsy-turvy front nine giving him a mere equal par 18pts, Gabriel took the irons out of the fire and roasted the inward nine with 23pts to record a winning score of 41pts.

Sunday 10th confined competition, played in dry but cold conditions, hosted a tight finish between no less than four of the club's single figure handicappers with 'King' Kenny [8] coming out on top by virtue of a B.O.T. With a mediocre outward nine returning only 16pts, Kenny showed his fighting qualities to record back-to-back birdies at Settlement [11th], Sheep Hill [12th] and Candalabra [15th] before an unwarranted double bogey at 17th reduced his back nine total to 22pts. But it was still enough to relegate Kieran Sweeney [6] to runner-up spot. Indeed Kieran's front nine was the better with a gross 37 shots and 20pts but his birdie at Hunters Home, the par three 13th, just wasn't enough for the win.

In third place was John Doran [7] with 37pts. Gross prize was won by Kevin Rafferty [6] whose card included birdies at 2nd [Glebe], 11th and 12th holes but a double bogey at 6th and a bogey at 13th had him finishing with 31 gross pts.

Open competitions continue on Friday and Saturday with Sunday 17th confined being the first 'major' of the season with the club's Voucher competition. Monday 18th will witness the start of the club's Murphy Maintenance sponsored matchplay competitions whilst Wednesday 20th Open is sponsored by C & M Embroidery. Friday 22nd hosts the Ladies Club Fundraising Open Classic, any combination, €100 per team.

The club Captains Ivan and Jacqueline, President Greg and all members proudly welcome Seamus Mc Monagle as their club PGA Professional .

Congratulations to the Eamon O'Carroll-led Ulster Cup team who defeated Ballyliffin GC. In the first leg qualifying at the Inishowen club on Saturday last. Letterkenny hold a 5 &1/2 to 1 &1/2 lead going into the return leg at home this Saturday, April 16th.
