Donegal Town basketball club’s U14 girls clinched the Division 2 All Ireland title following a wonderful weekend of competition at the Antrim Forum.
This was a fantastic achievement for the Donegal side as they adjusted to the high demands of tournament basketball.
The action began on Saturday, although Donegal Town didn’t find their best form until Sunday.
They had a great first win over Muckno Lakers on Saturday but fell short by just 5 points without playing near their best against a strong Tullamore side.
On Sunday, Donegal Town got back to winning ways with a 15 point victory over Kiltimagh Giants to set up a final against Crossmolina Tigers. In a thrilling contest, Donegal Town eventually pulled clear to win by 13 points.
Among the players to impress were Orla Carbery (who has been outstanding since joining the club), Lucy McGowan, team captain Amy Lorinyenko, Katie Timoney, Aoife Mackle and Sophie Carr. Indeed a big well done to the panel of 14 girls and not to forget Courtney Harron who couldn't make it at the weekend but she certainly played her part over the league.
Donegal Town’s MVP for the weekend had to be Sophie Carr who showed real leadership and maturity when things were tough.
Coach Kevin Sinclair has extended thanks to the players and all who contributed to the weekend success including Team Manager Rosemary Carr and her helpers, sponsors The Sand House Hotel, Charael Catering and Conneelly Transport. Thanks also to the Abbey Vocational School who allowed the team use the gym when needed in the lead up to the finals.
