GOLF ROUND UP

Plenty happening on Donegal's golf courses competitions

There were plenty of competitions held on the county's golf courses over the weekend.

GUI competitions are also up and running and a number of our golf clubs have enjoyed good starts in those outings.

Here's a full run-down on what's been happening over the past week.

BUNDORAN

The results for the weekend competition, kindly sponsored by McMorrow

Solicitors Bundoran were as follows:

1st: Oran Gallagher 43 pts.

2nd : Dan McGloin 40 pts.

3rd: John Gormley 39 pts.

4th: Gerry Horgan 37 pts. B.O.T.

Gross: Mark Crawford 33 pts.

Congratulations to all.

Presentations will be held at 9pm on April 22nd.

The competition next weekend will be singles stableford; sponsored by E. &

J. Oil Services, Ballintra.

Ballybofey and Stranorlar

As we all know, the season of GUI competitions has started and B&S has had two outings at thye weekend.

On Saturday our Ulster Fourball, under the guidance of Fergus McMenamin, had a great result at home against Larne Golf Club winning 4 1/2 matches to one 1/2 of a match. This makes the away leg seem a little easier but as we know all too well, travelling away from home can often change good home results. However, t the Team Captain has full faith in his squad that has a whole new look to it. Good luck in your away leg gentlemen.

The club's second match of the weekend belonged to the youth of the club. A match which was postponed from last Friday due to the elements was rescheduled for Sunday . The Fred Daly Trophy Team and their Captain Seán Carlin had the daunting task of taking on a much fancied team from Dungannon GC, the home of the great Darren Clarke.

Much to the delight of Seán, we were up in three matches after five holes and after nine holes we were still three up but down in the other two. Most of the Dungannon lads were single figure golfers and it showed but with great patience and great shot-making skills, B&S fought back and ended up winning three matches and halving two, giving an end victory of 4 matches to one match. The match of the day has to go to Joel Bradley Walsh who was 5 holes down after 5 holes played, but fought his way back to win his match on the 18th hole. Best gesture of the day surely must go to Ryan Griffin who after parring the 18th with the Dungannon man left with a putt of about 4 foot for par to half the hole and the match (no gimme under pressure) , but Ryan in the spirit of the game gave him the putt and the Dungannon man was delighted. Well done Ryan.

The boys are away next Sunday and with Dungannon bringing in their big guns for that match, it's all to play for. Best of luck lads.

Next week also, John McMenamin takes his Ulster Cup side to Cavan for the first leg. Good luck to John and his team.

Donegal

The Thursday Specials had their first 9 hole competition of the year last Thursday and the scoring didn't suffer from any post winter rustiness. Matt Gallagher took the spoils on the day with a fantastic score of 23pts, followed by Colm Campbell who on B.O.T, pushed Kieran Keeney back to 3rd on 22pts.

The Past members' prize was won by Club Captain Gerry Forde who couldn't miss a putt, with 20pts.

The Juniors were out in force on Sunday as Martin Carr's Fred Daly team played host to the visitors from Carnalea. The result went in favour of the home team and makes for an interesting return match in Carnalea G.C. Bangor on Saturday. Good luck boys.

Congrats to our Captain Donal who was runner-up in the Scratch Cup in Dunfanaghy last weekend and is leading the club from the front.

Dunfanaghy

The club hosted the Senior and Intermediate Scratch Cups at the weekend. See report on this page.

Wednesday’s competition was won by Jonny McClintock. Just when he thought his 13-year-old son, Tom, was about to get his handicap down below his father’s, Jonny came in with 46 pts on Wednesday to win the Wednesday Open Competition by three shots. Jonny’s handicap has now come down from 19 to 15 within the past two weeks and he is hoping to be in single figures before June!

Well done also to Eamonn McGrath who won the Sunday Club Competition with 37 pts.

Junior Golf: While there was no Junior Competition last Saturday on account of the Scratch Cup, there was plenty of excitement during the week with the home and away legs of the Fred Daly Under 18’s Competition against Letterkenny. On Tuesday, our boys lost narrowly in the away leg with Conor Hanna giving the performance of the day by winning on the 18th.

In the return leg our very young team put on a superb performance. The team was made of Tom McClintock aged 13, Luke Kelly aged 12, Conor Hanna aged 12, Rory Kelly aged 11 and James Sweeney aged 10 (Dean McColgan and Kyle McGarvey played in the away leg). All of the boys performed brilliantly.

The shot of the day went to Rory Kelly who ripped a massive drive down the first hole in front of a huge audience. The opposition were much older and more experienced but our boys were in no way intimidated. The performance of the day went to the youngest member of the team, James Sweeney, who beat his 10 handicap opponent in a very tight battle. The pair were all square after 16 but James had a superb par on 17 to go one up and managed to close it out on the last hole. Well done to all the boys. The future certainly looks bright.

Letterkenny

With the weather still so unpredictable, it is hard to get playing at all but one golfer whose persistence is paying off is Kevin Rafferty [6] whose winning scorecard from the Wednesday 30th Open showed steady, mature golf. He had dropped shots at the par three 5th [Inishowen], 9th hole [Crievesmith] and 17th [Aughaninshin] for a three over gross 75 and 39pts to pip runners-up Enda O'Donnell and Kevin Hannigan, both on 37pts.

Saturday 2nd April Open was won by another member whose dedication is also paying dividends early in the season as Sam Hegarty [19] once again proved the old adage of 'practice makes perfect'. Having been stumped by a double bogey at Hackett's Best [6th], Sam's birdie reply at par three 8th [Greenhills] was instantly dismissed by another double bogey at Crievesmith [9th], before a more consistent back nine recorded 22pts for an overall winning score of 41pts to outpoint the 'form' golfer at the moment, Kevin Hannigan [7] by one.

Kevin's start of bogey-birdie had him take the turn on an average 18pts but birdies at Settlement [11th] and 17th just wasn't enough having faltered at Candalabra [15th] with another bogey to leave him on 40pts.

Week-end competitions: The competition on Saturday will decide the male member who goes forward to represent the club alongside lady member Celine Bradley at the qualifying round of the Irish Open Pro-Am. The member of the club with the best score will go forward to the qualifying round which will be held at Rockmount Golf club on Monday, 11th April. There are 38 teams playing in the 'North' qualifier section at Rockmount GC, the top 3 teams of which will advance to the All Ireland Final (with teams for other sections) to be played on the Smurfit Course at the K Club in early May.

Sunday 10th April competition will be the first 'major' of the year, the club's voucher competition.

Spaces are closing fast for both of these massive weekend competitions so members are advised to book their slot asap.

Spaces are also closing fast for the Ladies-organized Fundraising Classic Open which takes place on Friday, 22nd April. Teams of four, any combination, €100 per team.

Congratulations to the club's Fred Daly team who defeated near rivals Dunfanaghy GC. over two legs to proceed to the next round when they will play Malone GC.

Congratulations also to club member James Mc Fadden who finished runner-up in the Dunfanaghy Intermediate Scratch Cup last weekend.

Club Captain, Ivan Fuery, Lady Captain, Jacqueline Ireland, President Greg Sullivan, all club committees' and members would like to welcome Seamus Mc Monagle as the club's new PGA Professional.
