Donegal hurlers meet Wicklow in relegation play-off

Donegal get the chance to turn the tables on Wicklow when they meet in the Allianz League Division 2B relegation play-off in Pairc Esler, Newry, on Saturday (2.30 p.m.)

When the sides met in Aughrim two weeks ago, Wicklow were too strong, winning 2-27 to 0-17, but Donegal had to travel that morning to the venue, which was far from ideal.

These two sides finished bottom of the table, with Donegal finding the going tough, losing all their matches, but they have two chances to still remain in Division 2B next season.

If they fail to win on Saturday next, then Ardal McDermott’s side will have a final play-off with Division 3A champions, Roscommon. Roscommon defeated Monaghan easily enough on Saturday last in Ballyshannon to secure that league title.

The Donegal manager knew going into the last game with Wicklow that he would be meeting them again this weekend in the play-off and after that game he said that getting a crack at them at a neutral venue would be different.

“It was another tough lesson for us. But it was no more than we expected in this division when we started out at the beginning of the year,” said Donegal manager Ardal McDermott.

“We are hoping to have a more settled team for the play-off and that is the focus now.”

One plus from that game was the return to the hurling field of MacCumhaill’s Jamesie Donnelly and he has had two weeks training done since.

No doubt he will add something to the Donegal challenge but whether they can overcome Wicklow is another matter. It could all come down to a play-off with Roscommon a week later.
