Mark English will miss next week’s World Indoor Athletic Championship due to injury.
The Letterkenny man, one of Ireland’s best medal prospects, has been forced to pull out of the championship with an ankle injury. The European silver medalist at 800 metres injured the ankle in training on Saturday. This was confirmed by Irish athletics coach Patsy McGonagle.
It is believed he twisted his ankle and it was sufficiently serious that he decided to withdraw.
The World Indoor Championship are being held in Portland, Oregon and start on St Patrick’s Day, March 17th and run to Sunday March 20th.
The injury is also a concern as he prepares for this Summer’s Olympic Games in Rio and his decision to withdraw from the World Indoors may be precautionary to avoid aggravating the injury further. It is nevertheless disappointing for the young Letterkenny man.
