Abbey Vocational School lifted their first Markey Cup following Tuesday night’s seven point final win over Fermanagh Schools in Garvaghy.
Abbey VS 1-12
Fermanagh Schools 1-5
Daniel Brennan scored five points in a man of the match performance and Daniel Gallagher hit the goal for the winners, who dominated the encounter for most of the 60 plus minutes.
They led 1-4 to 0-2 at half-time with Gallagher pouncing for the Abbey goal six minutes before the interval while Brennan (3), Jamie Crawford and Brendan McCole posted the Abbey first half points.
Ryan Morris posted Fermanagh’s two first half points, both scored in the closing six minutes of the half.
Aaron McCrea, John Relihan, Peadar Mogan, Brendan McCole, Neil Ward, Nathan Ward, Jack Keaney, Brennan and Thomas McGowan played out of their skins on a testing surface. Gavin Mulreay was very solid in goals.
Abbey continued to control the game in the second half. Brennan, Nathan Ward and Jack Keaney kept the scoreboard ticking and they had opened up a 1-11 to 0-5 lead before Morris found the roof of the Abbey net from a 13 metre free, four minutes into time added on.
Conor Breslin scored the game’s final point in the closing seconds.
The final was marred by a flare up involving almost all the players from both sides close to the end of normal time. The ugly melee, which lasted well over a minute, was totally out of character with the rest of the game which was at all times competitive but played in a fair manner.
The incident was sparked by a late tackle close to the Fermanagh posts on Abbey’s Jack Keaney from Fermanagh corner-back Chris McCabe as Keaney laid off the ball to Neil Ward. The players ended up wrestling on the ground.
After consulting with his umpires the referee showed Keaney and the Fermanagh pair of McCabe and Thomas Curran straight red cards. Abbey’s Thomas McGowan was also shown a black card.
