No success for Donegal in Sigerson Cup

There was no fairytale ending to the Sigerson Cup for Glenswilly goalkeeper Philip O’Donnell following Dublin City University’s defeat by UCD in Saturday’s Sigerson Cup final.

The Glenswilly custodian, who deputised for injured first choice DCU keeper Brendan Flynn in both the semi-final and final, kept a clean sheet in both games.

However, the reigning champions lost the final by two points, 0-10 to 2-2, to University College, Dublin.

O’Donnell also kept his goals intact in Friday’s semi-final 1-14 to 0-13 win over the competition's hosts UUJ who had Patrick McBrearty and Ryan McHugh in their line-up. Martin McHugh was also a member of the UUJ management team.

Westmeath's John Heslin scored six points in a man-of -the-match performance for a UCD side that dashed any hope of Sigerson silverware for O’Donnell, Caolan McGonagle, Cian Mulligan and Nathan Gavigan, who were also members of the DCU squad.

McGonagle did not feature in the final but was sprung from the bench late in the semi-final.

DCU failed to rediscover their semi-final form in the final, and on a very heavy pitch that cut up badly as the final wore on, UCD were the better side and deservedly won their first Sigerson Cup in 20 years.

Footballer of the Year for 2015, Jack McCaffrey also turned in a big performance for UCD before limping out of the game with an ankle injury in the closing minutes.

Monaghan’s Shane Carey scored 1-8 for DCU in the semi-final against UUJ while Patrick McBrearty was top scorer for UUJ with six points, five of them from frees.

Carey’s goal midway through the first half was the big score in the semi-final and from then to the finish UUJ were always chasing the game.

DCU scored the game’s three opening points and led 1-5 to 0-5 at half time.

DCU were in front by six, 1-11 to 0-8 by the three quarter mark before UUJ mounted a late revival with points from Ryan McHugh, Kieran Hughes and McBrearty.

But it was not enough and DCU held on for the win and a final date with UCD.
