Fixtures unveiled for new all county league season

St Michael’s, the reigning Donegal Division One champions, will begin the defence of their league title away to Dungloe in Rosses Park on the opening day of the 2016 Donegal All County Football League season.

This game is one of five Division One ties down for decision on the opening day which is on Saturday, March 20th.

The other games see Dr Maguire Cup holders Naomh Conaill entertain newly promoted Termon in Davy Brennan Memorial Park, Gaoth Dobhair hosting St Eunan’s in Magheragallon, Ardara at home to Glenswilly, and the other promoted side Realt Na Mara, Bundoran hosting Kilcar in Gaelic Park.

The fixtures were revealed to the clubs over the weekend and they cover the first five weeks of the leagues in all four divisions.

The second round of games are on March 28th with further rounds on April 10th, April 17 th and April 24th.

As usual the fixtures come with the usual proviso and very much depend on how the county team is doing. Given Donegal’s promising start to the new season and with qualification for the latter stages of the Allianz League a distinct possibility, the third round fixtures on April 10 th could be the first casualty of the new season.

However, the CCC has a contingency plan if Donegal qualify for the league semi-final. It is proposed to play a Matched round of games on April 10th. The Matched round would replace round three which would be postponed until later in the season.

Similarly, if Rory Gallagher guides Donegal to the league final which has been fixed for April 24th, round five may have to be parked until later in the season.

How Declan Bonner’s U-21s get on in the Ulster U-21 championship may also have an impact on the proposed schedule.

The CCC have two extra Matched games to play with this year following decision to increase the number of Star/Matched games from four to six.

In an email to clubs, the CCC have once again reiterated that there is no room in the fixture schedules for free weekends.

If a club wants a free weekend, it will only be accommodated with the consent of their opponents on the particular weekend and as long as the game is played no later than within seven days of the original date.

Meanwhile Donegal return to action on Sunday with a home match against Mayo in Sean MacCumhaill Park in Ballybofey.

Rory Gallagher's side returned from their training camp in Tenerife on Thursday with some members of the squad involved in Sigerson Cup action on Friday and Saturday.

There promises to be plenty of interest in Sunday's game against Mayo.

Donegal have enjoyed a terrific start to their new Division One campaign with impressive wins over Down and Cork.

They played Derry in a challenge game in Celtic Park yesterday while Donegal U-21s played Dublin on Saturday and lost by two points.
