Donegal A win 2016 Jim Taylor Cup

The 2016 Jim Taylor Cup, Co. Donegal Senior Badminton Team Competition was held recently at the Aura Centre, Letterkenny.

The annual competition, under the direction of Competition Secretary, William Love, was supported by Northern Auto Parts, Donegal Town and Michael Murphy Sports, Lettterkenny with a 10 am. start.

In the early matches of the morning, Donegal A beat Donegal B 7/0 and North West secured a 5/2 win over Coleraine and Dt.

Second round matches saw Donegal A beat Coleraine 6/1 and North West added on the same number of points to their total with a 6/1 win over Donegal B.

The fight for the Division 2 title saw Donegal B. , with many new faces making their first appearance on the Co. Donegal senior squads, take on eve very experienced Coleraine and District side.

Donegal B squad: Fiona Hillen, Janice McCandless, Shannon Russell, Kim Laird and Emma Gallagher,

Christopher Kemps, Russell Love, Martin Mooney and Jack Macbeth.

Coleraine and District: Trisha Downey, Ciara Nelson, Alison Park, Rachael Huey, Mark McConnell, William Snelling, Colin Scott and Raymond Bell.

Donegal B won 1st mens, Christopher and Russell beat Mark and William 21/15, 21/15. 2nd. mens also went the way of Donegal B as Martin and Jack beat Colin and Raymond 21/6, 21/15.

Coleraine hit back winning both ladies doubles, as expected. Fiona and Janice giving a very good account of themselves, Thrisa and Ciara winning the pt. 21/19, 21/15. Donegal B young kids on the block, Emma and Kim put in an outstanding performance in 2nd. ladies , only pipped at the post 15/21, 21/15, 17/21, by the very experienced Ulster players Alison and Rachael.

In 1st Mixed, Janice and Christopher had their best performance of the day, going down fighting 21/16, 18/21, 18/21 to Trisha and Mark.

Coleraine`s Ciara and William beat Fiona and Russell 21/18, 21/15 in 2nd. Mixed, as Donegal B had a similar good win in 3rd mixed, Shannon and Martin beat Alison and Colin 21/17, 21/17. Excellent match.

Result: Coleraine 4 pts. Donegal B. 3 pts.

Donegal B. very worthy runners up 5 Pts.

Final match Donegal A. 13 Pts., North West 11 Pts.

Donegal A: Kathy Ann Gibson, Laura McElhinney, Deborah Moore, Hazel Fisher, Siobhan Parker,

Ian Macbeth, Alan Macbeth, Simon Moore, Mark McLucas and Mark Laird.

North West: Barbara Trimble, Gillian Thompson, Ashling Arnold, Carol McElhinney, Deane McCarter, Kyle Magee, Glen Duncan and Noel Jackson.

The battle for the Jim Taylor Cup 2016 was nearing a conclusion, as North West, with their very strong men, took on the defending champions Donegal A.

North West got off to a very good start, winning 1st and 2nd mens doubles.Deane and Kyle beat Ian and Alan 21/19, 21/11. Meanwhile in 2nd. mens Simon and Mark did not do much better, going down fighting 17/21, 14/21 to Glen and Noel.

Donegal ladies hit back, Kathy Ann and Laura beat Barbara and Gillian 21/10, 21/11 in 1st ladies, however in 2nd ladies Hazel and Siobhan had to work very hard to overcome their fellow Dunfanaghy club members Ashling and Carol 21/18, 19/21, 21/17.

Donegal A 2 pts. North West 2 Pts.

Mixed Doubles: Ian Macbeth, Donegal A team captain, with Kathy Ann, secured a very valuable and title winning pointin 1st mixed, holding of a very strong challenge from Barbara and Deane, 21/19 in the first game before Kathy Ann and Ian killed off the set 21/8 in the second game.

2nd and 3rd mixed produced excellent competition, both sets eventually going the way of North West.

Ashling and Kyle beat Deborah and Simon 16/21, 21/17, 21/19 in 2nd mixed, as a similar dog fight in 3rd mixed went to Carol and Glen 20/22, 22/20, 21/11 over Hazel and Mark.

North West 4pts. Donegal B. 3. pts. North West won the match but lost the battle for the Jim Taylor Cup.

2016 Jim Taylor Cup: Winners: Donegal 16 Pts. Runners-up North West 15 Pts.
