I wonder should we just insert a wee note asking if any one was interested in contributing to the fundraising for the Donegal GAA Centre of Excellence in Convoy. The County Board are seeking donors of €500 euro.  If they can fundraise €125K they may be in a position to get a further grant of €250K from Croke Park. And with these monies they will be able to fence and floodlight the two pitches, which will be ready for use by the autumn. Thus enabling our County Teams do their winter training in preparation for the National League in football and hurling in 2013 at the Centre of Excellence. If anyone is in a position to assist they might contact Aideen Gillen.

NAOMH ULTAN:

The Take you Pick Jackpot of is €220. Again at underage level there was a huge amount of football played throughout last week in various age groups. Our U12 team continued their excellent run of form beating Naomh Brid 3-8 to 0-2.

The U14 were out twice last week but sustained two losses to Glen and Naomh Naille, despite these losses the team have earned a spot in the Division 3 league regional final where they meet Killybegs. The game is fixed for Wednesday June 20th, venue yet to be confirmed.

Both Senior and Reserve teams were out in action over on Saturday evening last away to Letterkenny Gaels.

The reserves continued their string of good results by beating Gaels 1-11 to 1-8. The team, down by four points early in the first half, clawed back at Gaels before the interval to make it a one point game. A goal from the returning Patrick White restored there lead and they then finished the game out well. Scorers were - Paul McGeoghan (0-4), Patrick White (1-0), Liam Kennedy & Sean Furey (0-2), Paul Murrin, Ronan Murrin & Kevin O’Donnell (0-1).

The Senior team made it two from two games with a convincing 8 point win on a scoreline of 3-12 to 3-4. With scores level at half time the boys gave a very strong second half performance banging in 3-6 in the half. Scorers were - Dermot Gallier (1-6), Aaron Byrne (2-2), Aiden Duddy (0-2), Cian Kennedy & Alan Lyons (0-1). Both teams are fixed to play Naomh Colmille on Sunday next in Dunkineely.

TIR CHONAIL GAELS:

The senior team advanced to the semi finals of the Conway cup last weekend after defeating Round Towers at a sunny and blustery Ruislip.

Playing against the wind in the opening half the Gaels had plenty of chances but found it difficult to score with the swirling wind.

Dean Gordon found the net midway through the half after a goal mouth scramble, the half time score ended at 1-6 to 0-5.

The second half saw the Gaels up the tempo with some excellent long range points from Micheal Traynor, Benny O’Reilly and Ciaran Boyle.

All five subs were used early in the half and with 20 minutes remaining Dean Gordon got injured and had to leave the field leaving us with 14 men for the remainder of the game.

This seemed to make little difference as the Gaels kept marching forward and with ten minutes remaining that man again Ciaran Boyle popped up to score another goal after some excellent link play.

Best on the day were Austin Concannon, David Harrington, Ciaran Boyle, Benny O’Reilly and Marty Mc Coy. Mossy you will need to play for longer than 10 minutes to get a mention!! Final score TCG 2-15, Round Towers 1-6.

Juniors:

St Anthony’s 1-14 TCG Juniors 1-03. A disappointing performance and result this time out for the junior team despite great performances from stalwarts Tommy Moriarty and Kevin McFadden. Playing against a strong breeze in the 1st half, TCG just about managed to keep in touch at halftime despite their first point coming after the Reading men had already notched up 5 scores. However TCG were unable to use the wind to their advantage in the 2nd half and had a lucky goal cancelled out by a well-worked St Anthony’s effort. On reflection this was a heavy defeat, which could have been worse had St Anthony’s not been so wasteful in front of the posts, so plenty to consider prior to Championship. Training this coming Monday and Wednesday at 7:30pm.

Reserves:

The reserve team continued their good start to the season with a one point victory over Fulham Irish in the league last Sunday at Greenford.

Fulham took an early five point lead before the Gaels registered a score, but as the half wore on we started to find our feet before going in at half time 0-8 to 0-6 down.

The second half was tit for tat with both teams scoring a goal, the Gaels coming from Kevin Wappa McMenamin. Best on the day were Paddy Callaghan, Ronan Madine, Gary Kane and Wappa. Many thanks to Maurice Carr for refereeing.

Final score TCG 1-11, Fulham Irish 1-10

For this weeks fixtures please check local newspapers or the club website on www.tirchonaillgaels.com for details.

The ladies team played a double header last Saturday against Thomas McCurtains in the Championship/league at Goodmayes.

The girls put up a brave performance against a more experienced team but eventually went down by a score of 2-11 to 1-3.

Best on the day were Jenny Dillon, Katie O’ Boyle, Susanna Gill, Ciara Rice and Fiona Campbell.

The u/14s have a game against Carndonagh at home this Wednesday evening and are away to Naomh Colmcille next week, they had a good win last week when they defeated Red Hughs comprehensively.

The senior men had no game last weekend or next because of the Donegal/Derry match. The reserves travelled to Ballintra on Saturday night  and recorded a good win.

The senior ladies are away to Moville next Sunday in the thirteen a side league.

NAOMH BRID:

Our reserves took on Glenfin on Saturday evening last at Pairc Naomh Brid. Playing against a stiff breeze the lads put up a great fight in the first 20 minutes but two quick Glenfin goals left them in control at the break 2-8 to 0-3. The lads tagged on a number of points to cut the deficit at the beginning of the second half but Glenfin managed to tag on a few points of their own to keep themselves ahead. In what was an entertaining game of football, Glenfin emerged victorious on a scoreline on 2-13 to 0-9.

A defibrillator course will take place in the Community Centre, Ballintra on Monday 18th June at 7pm for any persons who wish to take part. The cost of the course is €60.

The club are currently trying to compile a collection of old photos and articles etc. of club teams. Could any persons who are willing to give some articles and photos to be copied get in contact with Martin O’Malley regarding this.

ST. NAUL’S:

There was no winner of last weekend’s Slotto jackpot. The 80 euro prize for nearest to the correct sequence is Patsy Quinn Drimconnor. The sequence drawn was 5, 4, 6, 3, 1, 2, 7. Next weeks jackpot in 1700 Euro.

Last weekend both sides traveled to Aodh Ruadh in the league. A poor first half performance by the reserve side led to their defeat despite a much improed second half display. The senior team were one point winners in what was an impressive team performance. There are no games this week due to the Donegal V Derry game in the Ulster Championship.

The club extends its best wishes to Stephen Griffin and the Donegal squad for their Ulster Semi Final clash this Saturday against Derry in Ballybofey.

AODH RUADH:

Aodh Ruadh were denied at least a deserved share of the points after a battling performance against Saint Naul’s. Damien Cleary was excellent form for Aodh Ruadh with 1-2, even despite managing to get himself sent off on a second yellow. Donagh McIntyre also soldiered well in the middle. It was a good game for the Aodh Ruadh old guard in general with Brian Roper, Niall McCready and Sticky Ward all clearly relishing the summer sod. We have a full match report and pictures up on aodhruadh.org.

Aodh Ruadh’s reserves made great use of a strong first half breeze to put themselves in a commanding half time position against Saint Naul’s. Goals from Steven Perry and Fiachra McIntyre, plus a points from Jamie McDonald and Val Murray helped see to a 2-8 to 0-2 half time lead. In the second half points from Eamon McGrath, Anthony Coughlan, Jamie McDonald and Stephen McGrath were added to seal the win for the homesters. Aodh Ruadh were well served by a superb half back display from Spanny Goan, Stephen McGrath and Eamon McGrath who were outstanding throughout, particularly when the heat came on in the second half. The returning Aidan Murray gave a masterclass in midfield, while the half forward line of Val Murray, Jamie McDonald and Steven Perry scored heavily. The full forward line of Chris McCabe, Fiachra McIntyre and Anthony Coughlan also presented a considerable threat across the 60. We have pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org.

With the Ulster Championship this weekend our next game will be on Saturday June 23rd away to Termon with the reserves throwing in at 6pm followed by the seniors at 7.30pm. The week after we host Downings in Father Tierney park on Saturday 30th June. Again the throw in times are 6pm and 7.30pm.

Last Wednesday evening the under 14s finished their round robin matches with the top four clubs battling out in the semi finals. This see Naomh Conaill take on Aodh Ruadh in the first semi-final with Four Masters playing Ardara in the other. The semi-finals will be played as a double header on Saturday 16th June. Venues and referees to be confirmed.

The under 12s lost their game in the league against Dungloe on Monday on a score line of 6-12 to 2-7. Ciaran Meehan and Ronan McGarrigle soldiered well in defence while Mark Gallagher worked hard in goals. Michael McKenna and Dylan Gallagher had a great second half in the middle of the field. Training continues this Friday at 4.15pm. We travel to Annagry for our last game of the year next Monday. All players are to meet at the park at 4.15pm sharp for their trip to Naomh Mhuire.

Aodh Ruadh hosted a highly successful under 10 Mick Shannon tournament last Saturday with teams attending from Melvin Gaels, Bundoran, Erne Gaels and Four Masters. The lads did very well, delivering some excellent performances across the tournament and winning the A section, with Melvin Gaels claiming the B title. Many thanks to our sponsors on the day: Spar, Mace, Centra, Pearse O’Neill’s and Erne Fresh Foods. Thanks also to parents for all their help with the catering. Thanks to everyone who reffed and officiated on the day. We have over 40 images from the day’s action taken by Ronan Matthews and Kerry Ryan up on aodhruadh.org. Under 10 training continues this Thursday, 14th June in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh from 6pm to 7pm. Parents/Guardians are asked to please collect children promptly after their session is finished. The under 10s will be travelling to a blitz in Bundoran this Saturday 16th June. We will be looking for parents to assist with transport to this game. All players and parents/guardians able to help with transport are asked to assemble at Father Tierney Park for 9.45am. Players are asked to bring club socks and togs.

The under 8s had a very successful trip to Ballintra on Saturday morning. The players really did themselves and the club proud. We have a picture of them up on the aodhruadh.org homepage. Back row l-r: James McGinley, Michael Doogan, Tommy Winters, Eoghan Kelly, Darragh Dolan and David Roper. Front row: Lauren Foy, Shane Delahunty, Shane McGloin and Ronan Barron. We were well looked after by Naomh Bríd. Darragh Dolan was our captain on the day and received a trophy from Naomh Bríd recognising Aodh Ruadh’s participation. Many thanks to all the parents who helped bring the players down and supported us on the day. Under 8 and under 6 training continues this Friday 15th June from 6pm to 7pm in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh.

Hurling:

The under 14 hurlers play MacCumhaill’s on Thursday night in Ballybofey with a throw in time of 7pm. This game was due to be played last week but was postponed due to the pitch being flooded. We face a tough battle against the Twin Towns men, who recently won the B League final, for the right to play Buncrana in the county final.

We are hosting an under 12 all county blitz this Sunday with play begining at 11am.

Congratulations to Meabh Rooney and Shane Gillespie who qualified for the Community Games All Ireland Finals, to be held in Athlone at the end of August, at the County Finals in Milford on Sunday, Meabh won the Long Puc and Shane qualified in the 600 metres. We have a picture of Meabh and Shane on the aodhruadh.org home page.

Aodh Ruadh under 14s are doing a Cash for Clothes Collection as a fundraiser for the Féile na nGael in Dublin in July. We would greatly appreciate any bags of old clothes, belts, handbags and shoes. We will also take blankets and curtains as long as they are kept separate from the other clothes. Spread the word to family, friends and neighbours, we will be getting the clothes weighed in early June so get clearing out your closets thanks! For any queries regarding this fund-raiser please contact John Rooney 086-2587793, Eileen McCaffrey 087-3172920 or Tara Keenaghan 086-3331903. The final day for collecting clothes is Monday 18th June.

Training as normal on Sunday for all age groups at 12 noon.

Ladies:

Last Tuesday the Aodh Ruadh under 14 girls put in a solid performance to record their fourth successive win of the campaign, this time defeating Kilcar. Aodh Ruadh dominated for most of the game and were unfortunate not to have totted up more scores. A few excellent saves from Kelsie Warren kept the girls on the correct side of the score line. She was assisted by her defenders who made each score difficult for the opposition. Orlaith Gillespie and Meabh Rooney contributed greatly with endless running at the middle of the field against a strong Kilcar pairing. The Ballyshannon forwards all worked of their socks to get the scores that counted. Mary Flora Scott was on fire again getting three goals bringing her last two matches tally to seven goals. One of these goals was a crucial late effort on Tuesday that hit one post and rolled right over to the other before finding its way over the goal-line much to the Aodh Ruadh supporters delight. This victory brings the girls to a county semi-final due to be played on 26th June. The opponents for that semi-final have yet to be decided as there are a number of the games from the north of the county remaining to be played out. We have a full match report with team sheet and pictures up on aodhruadh.org.

Aodh Ruadh under 12s will host the Willie Rogers tournament this Wednesday evening at 6pm in Father Tierney park. After months of preparation this is the first time the girls will take to the field this season, hopefully they will have plenty of support on the evening.

Under 10 and under 8 training will take place in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh from 6pm on Wednesday evening to 6.45pm.

Our next aluminium can collection for recycling to raise much needed funds for Aodh Ruadh and to protect the local enviroment takes place this Saturday 16th June at Father Tierney Park from 12 noon to 1pm. We have had a great response to this scheme and so far we have recycled over 1.6 tonnes of aluminium cans, thanks to all the community and businesses who have supported us with this venture. For any information on this recycling campaign please contact John Rooney 086-2587793 or Kieran Drummond 086-2368295.

An impressive haul of 32 points has seen Rachel Patton’s Leitrim Lassies rocket to the top of the Race For Sam standings. She had Sligo (10 points), Adrian Marren (2-6 = 12 points) and Limerick sharpshooter Ian Ryan (0-10 points). Meanwhile Charlie Patton is out on his own in the race for the wooden spoon, although Greg Sweeney’s Milky Bar Kids are also loitering with intent. View the week four leader board on aodhruadh.org or in The Bridgend Bar every Tuesday. The rules and scoring page has been updated with the scores for counties and players.

The U14 Hurlers lost out in the Championship semi-final against Buncrana. In a cracking game, St. Eunan’s led throughout but were eventually pipped by a late Buncrana goal. The lads should be proud of their season having made tremendous progress throughout the year.

St Eunan’s U8 hurlers attended a very well-run blitz hosted by Carndonagh on Sunday. We fielded two teams with each playing five games; both teams were very competitive showing both skill and determination. Other teams present were Carndonagh, Buncrana, Burt and the Letterkenny Gaels. Many thanks to the parents that travelled for their help and vocal support.
