MARK ANTHONY MCGINLEY and Cillian Morrison played their part as University College Dublin took the honours in the Collingwood Cup against Mary Immaculate at the University of Limerick last Thursday.
McGinley was undoubtedly the star of the show for the Dublin college, saving no less than four penalties in the shoot-out their last 16 win over Dublin Institute of Technology. The game itself finished 1-1 after extra-time. In fact, two years ago, when UCD beat NUI Galway at the Brandywell on penalties, McGinley saved twice in the shoot-out.
In the quarter-finals last week, UCD defeated NUI Maynooth 3-1 after extra-time and then had a simple passage through to the final, hammering the Royal College of Surgeons 6-0. In Thursday’s final, a Niall Hanley header on 12 minutes was enough to seal a 1-0 win over Mary Immaculate, with Morrison, from Letterkenny, coming off the bench. The Collingwood Cup is the main competition for third-level colleges in the country.
Both men will be looking to make an impact for the Students this season in the Airtricity League Premier Division. UCD open against Cork City at the Belfield Bowl on Friday night.
