Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT) Hurlers were defeated 2.12 to 1.10 by Colaiste Froebel (Dublin) in the final of the Irish Daily Mail Corn Padraig MacDiarmada Hurling Championship held in Middletown, Co. Armagh on Wednesday.
Played in excellent weather this match was fiercely contested throughout with only two points separating the teams at half time. LYIT started the second half very well but were only able to convert a faction of their scoring chances. As the game entering the final quarter and Froebel were able to take four unanswered points as the Letterkenny lads tired. With Froebel threatening to pull away the LYIT defence dug in but in the end Froebel ran out 5 points winners. Colaiste Froebel had the luxury of bringing on Shane Bergin (County All Star nominee 2011) midway through the second half to sweep up in their defence. The LYIT hurlers nevertheless by their display showed that hurling is alive and well in Donegal.
