Donegal Town claimed a dramatic win over Eany Celtic in the U12 Cup Final in a tentative match at the Hospital Field on Saturday
Donegal Town 1
(Joseph Campbell 60)
Eany Celtic 0
Eany Celtic started the brighter, the league champions were aiming for a 2nd successive double at U12 level. Josh Maxwell tested the keeper early on after good play down the right wing, he turned inside but could only fire into the keepers hands.
Minutes later Dermot McGuckin beat his man on the edge of the box before unleashing a strike which brought the best out of the Donegal keeper.
Donegal Town’s defence tightened up after that with any Eany Celtic opportunities being stopped by the Donegal captain Joseph Campbell.
The second half continued like the first as both sides were finding it difficult to break their opponents down, with Tom Daly and Kyle Campbell keeping solid at the back for Eany Celtic.
As the game drew towards it’s conclusion Donegal Town began to look for a decisive goal. Shay Travers was the first to be denied, as his shot couldn’t find a way through.
Moments later Dermot Slevin was also denied by a wonderful save from the Eany Celtic goalkeeper with the rebound being hit over the bar.
The pressure from Donegal Town ultimately forced the winner in injury time. A free kick awarded down the right hand side, 25 yards from goal, gave Joseph Campbell a chance from the set piece.
The Donegal captain expertly struck the ball high over the wall before it nestled into the Eany net leaving the Eany Celtic goalkeeper stranded.
