Shay Given has been promoted to Aston Villa’s coaching staff after two of Paul Lambert’s backroom team were suspended.
Villa have yet to disclose why assistant manager Ian Culverhouse and Gary Karsa, who is head of football operations, have been suspended, pending an internal investigation.
The club announced in a statement that Given and Gordon Cowans “have been temporarily promoted to assist manager Paul Lambert and his first team coaching staff.”
Lifford native Given was loaned out to Middlesbrough this season and has not played for Villa’s first team since January 2013.
“As players, it’s important that each and every one of us take responsibility right now and I’m delighted to play my part in helping the manager and the team go and try to win on Saturday,” Given said this afternoon.
Villa have lost their last four Premier League fixtures and welcome Southampton to Villa Park on Saturday.
