Gareth Doherty from Letterkenny Rovers was a second half substitute for the Republic of Ireland U-16s as they went down 4-1 to a fine Dutch team in Arnhem on Tuesday.

Doherty came on after 55 minutes for the side managed by Tom O’Connor, who conceded just before the break when Javairo Dilrosun found the net.

Any hope Ireland had of launching a quick response after the break suffered a blow when Joey Konings scored for the home side after just three minutes of the restart.

PSV starlet Konings found the net again in the 56th minute when he flicked home with his heel.

Dilrosun made it four in the 69th minute. Malahide United’s Zachary Elbouzedi pulled one back for Ireland in the 73rd minute

Doherty might get a chance to add to his caps when the teams meet again at the same venue in Arnhem on Thursday morning, kicking-off at 11am.
