Letterkenny native Ciara Grant and her Republic of Ireland teammates came within a whisker of claiming a draw against Germany in Saturday’s Fifa 2015 World Cup qualifier at Tallaght Stadium.

A freak injury time goal from Melanie Leupolz gave the Germans a 3-2 victory - their sixth win from six in the campaign.

Before Saturday, Germany had scored 40 and not conceded.

Grant, who plays for Raheny United, came on as a 61st minute substitute against the team ranked second in the world.

In the third minute central defender Louise Campbell headed Ireland into the lead and they held that advantage until 65th minute when the Germans equalised from a Simone Laudehr penalty.

Germany then took the lead in the 84th minute through Lena Lotzen, even though the German appeared to have fouled Ireland goalkeeper Emma Byrne.

However, the Irish showed tremendous character and substitute Stephanie Roche scored from close range in the 89th minute to make it 2-2 and leave the Irish on the verge of a famous result.

But, in injury time, a cross-cum-shot from Leupolz looped over the luckless Byrne for an extremely fortuitous winner.

Ireland have seven points from four outings and welcome Russia on May 7 and Croatia on June 14 before heading to Russia on June 19.
